Behavior Interview - How To Handle It

An example of the influence personality has on our behaviour is the surprising win that the English Rugby team had against Australia

. There were a great many comments about how differently the team played. From these discussions it emerged that the team had been through the colour programme, which identified personality type and how it could be put to the best use within a team.

The colour system splits personalities into four quadrants, and within a work shop setting this is an excellent method for demonstrating the effectiveness of different personalities. By encouraging each person to utilise their unique gifts they become able to improve the performance of the overall team. What had come out of the Rugby team's sessions was that they had all been adapting to one mode of behaviour. Once they understood their own particular personality style, Behavior interview and the corresponding strengths that attach to this personality, they were able to use this information to improve their behaviour within the team. The team overall became the winners.

To those who work with personality this was not a surprise, however England beating Australia was a huge surprise to the followers of the game.

If understanding personal behaviour, and how to use it effectively had this effect on a Rugby team, how much more effective would individuals be in applying these same methods in interviews. The most crucial aspect of selection comes from the behaviour interview.


By the time an applicant attends an interview; their skills, experience and education are already known to the interviewer. What a behaviour interview will do is enable the interviewer to see them interacting with others.

Generally people are called to an interview to see if their behaviour will fit within the employing organisation. The crucial factor for the applicant is to ensure that this behaviour interview will leave the employer with a favourable impression of how they will fit within their organisation.

The Rugby team did not win just because they understood their own personality they also learned about different personalities and how and why they behave in the way that they do.

To attend the behaviour interview armed with this knowledge will place the applicant in a very strong position. They will be able to asses the interviewer's personality, and what their behaviour is saying about them and respond accordingly. Over time our skills might change, our experience grows and we adapt our personality to suit situations. If we can do this consciously because we understand the impact of our behaviour against that of another, we become increasingly more effective. Behaviour interviews are where the deal is sealed which makes this the most important part of the overall process.
