Being A Rural Heritage Speaker Is Harder Than It Looks
Being a rrural heritage speaker takes a special sort of person
. Good speaking skills alone will not fulfill all that this job requires. This needs someone with a deep understanding of the importance of the position. The rural lands of America depend upon it. Overall, there is a lot that depends on these speakers, entire communities even.
There is a degree of speaking involved in a formal political arena. An example of this could be a town hall meeting, or town council. In some rare cases this can go as far as state government. The reasons behind this is needing to convey the reasons for keeping land undeveloped. Protecting rural communities from being overrun with large businesses that would push smaller family run businesses out.
Passion is required in order to really do this position any justice. The average informative talk will never do. To really accomplish the job the audience needs to be brought to feel a connection with the area and the people there. Without passion and urgency in his or her tone the speaker will be very ineffective.
Large scale developers can carry a lot of weight and importance. The biggest reason is that they also can put out a lot of money in order to get the approval that they need to do what they want to do. The speaker is in the position of standing up for the little guy. This is an uphill battle in most cases. The speaker should be armed with information.
A good knowledge of the history of the area is a must. When questions are asked they should be answered quickly and accurately. The more the speaker fumbles, the more the cause stands to loose. Aside from the history, current connections to the area is also vitally important. It must be clear that the importance of the land does not all lie in history books. There must be some current purpose being served by it remaining undeveloped.
The ideal person for the job must be free of any potential conflict of interest. If a person is speaking for this cause, he or she should have no ties to the developers wanting access. The person should also not have a vested interest in the community remaining as is. This should be a person that can stand in a completely neutral light.
While at a glance this job appears to be one of conveying the message and going through the motions, it goes far deeper than that. The rural heritage speaker can affect the futures of the communities they represent. This is a serious job, and anyone in this role deserves a lot of respect.
