Being Overweight Can Seriously Harm Your Health In Multiple Ways
Being overweight or obese is a huge and growing killer
. Now two thirds of us are in this category and the health risks are just slightly behind smoking. The reduction in life-span may be as much as 10-30 years.
As the overweight epidemic continues to grow scientists are researching the affect it truly has on health. It is pretty obvious that being overweight spoils ones appearance but up till recently they thought carrying around extra pounds must put a strain on the heart and other organs and contributed to conditions like arthritis and sleep issues.
This is true but those are relatively minor issues compared to the insidious damage caused by toxic mischief of the fat cells themselves. The yellowish oily globs of fat that is now covering human bodies like never before in history churn out a stew of hormones, the chemical messengers that fine tune the appetite, and the body's energy balance.
Now recognized as the body's biggest endocrine organ, fat tissue is abundant in even normal sized people. A slim woman of normal body weight typically has 30 percent body fat and a man 20 percent. That is enough fuel (calories) to keep a person alive for three months without eating.
As our inactive sedentary modern world collectively gains weight the fat cells grow and swell and the chemicals they spew out start to assault the body's organs in ways that are bad for health. By far the biggest single threat of being overweight is triple the risk of heart disease. The fat cells flood the blood vessels with chemicals causing them to narrow triggering high blood pressure putting a strain on the heart/lung system.
Overfilled fat cells can also cause a major hazard from their influence on the body's use of insulin. This is the hormone that 'pushes' glucose from the bloodstream into the muscle cells to burn it for energy. If the muscle cells cannot use the glucose because of a lack of physical activity the fat cells then take it in for storage and fat weight is gained.
Fat cells that are bursting with stored fat leak it into the bloodstream which causes the liver to make more insulin to try and remove it from the blood. Now blood sugar levels are high along with high insulin levels circulating around the body causing all sorts of mischief to organs and tissues that they comes into contact with. This is called insulin resistance which is the pre-runner to diabetes.
As the muscle cells are what burn up glucose from the blood they are the mechanism to put this situation to right. They need to be worked and worked hard and often so they can mop up not only the excess glucose floating around the body but start to use up the overfilled fuel in the fat stores. Vigorous activity is the key to not only losing excess body fat but removing the health risks that go hand-in-hand with it.
A proper program of strength training exercise is the fastest and most effective way to get back into healthy shape. It may not be what many people do not want to hear. They want an 'easy' and 'comfortable' life, without having to exert themselves in a physical way.
Well, the news is that the human body has to have proper physical activity that engages the muscular system so it can stay healthy. Remove this activity and there is a problem, a very big problem, like the overweight epidemic never seen before. Each of us has a choice about whether or not we want to go down this road.
Surely none of us want to be taken out by a big ticket killer like heart disease, cancer or diabetes or be inflicted by the dozens of other health problems that are stalking weakened, overweight and sickened human bodies. We must each take action, get off the couch, get active and fight to get our strong, lean healthy body back.
