Belladonna Remedy
Belladonna (Atropa belladonna, deadly nightshade)
Sudden intense congestions and flushing are characteristic of this remedy: the skin (mainly the head and face) and mucous membranes are a bright shiny red. There is intense burning and stinging in the inflamed parts: ears, throat and stomach all burn and swell rapidly; the patient is very sensitive to touch and everything feels as if it were about to burst open. Pains are intense, pulsing and throbbing or spasmodic and cramp-like: they begin and end suddenly. Blood vessels throb and pulse, as do local inflammations. The remedy is often indicated immediately after Aconite has stopped working or where the inflammation is more localized to the head and throat area.
Aconite inflammation is more general and the patient is thirstier.
The patient is extremely physically sensitive and easily affected by jarring, touch, movement; she cannot lie on the painful side. Though not particularly responsive to outside temperatures, she will be sensitive to draughts, especially on the head. She is usually thirstless - she may be thirsty, but thirst is not characteristic of Belladonna as it is of Aconite. She may crave lemons or lemonade when thirsty. When ill she wants to be warmly wrapped. Complaints tend to be right-sided. The patient is less fearful than is an Aconite patient and a child is more inclined to have tantrums and hit out and bite in rage. The very disturbed emotional state associated with Belladonna is most commonly seen in fevers but may also be seen in severe forms of mental illness. There is delirium and mania, the sufferer is very restless and agitated, talks very quickly, sees monsters, lives in her own world.
A person needing Belladonna will tend to have congested headaches with throbbing pains worse for any movement; throbbing earaches, red hot dry itchy burning skin rashes. She will be inclined to catch colds and may develop a raw, red sore throat worse on the right side and worse swallowing liquids with a violent, dry, barking cough. In haemorrhages the blood is bright red and clotted; there are violent, cramp-like period pains. It is well-indicated in the menopause and for any person with high blood pressure, even in stroke. It is useful in urinary tract inflammation and skin infections.
Better:
pressure, rest, warmth, light warm wraps.
Worse:
motion, jarring, touch, pressure, cold, light, noise, 3 p.m., night, getting head wet, draughts to head, lying on the painful side, sun (sunstroke), heat, lying down.
Belladonna symptoms come on suddenly, violently and intensely and go as quickly. The remedy picture is characterized by intense heat, redness, throbbing and swelling. Pains are burning. There is restlessness and extreme sensitivity to light, noise, touch. Complaints tend to be right-sided and are often accompanied by twitching, convulsive movements. It might be considered in abscesses, heavy bleeding, breast soreness, colds, convulsions, earache, fever, headache, high blood pressure, hot flushes, infectious diseases of children, inflammatory conditions, menopause, migraine, ovarian pain, piles, rheumatism, sinusitis, sore throat, sunstroke, tonsillitis, vertigo.
