Benefits Of New Traffic And Parking Sign Regulations
In the new few years, cities and towns around America will be faced with a number of considerations where street signs are concerned
. During the Bush administration, changes were made as it relates to the appearance of specific street and traffic signs. These changes will begin within the next few years.
Federal and state transportation departments will find themselves responsible for making and monitoring these changes. With the state of the current economy, not everyone is in favor of these changes. Some of the major concerns about these signs are their expense. Cities will require different pricing to make these changes to signs. This is one of the reasons that finding affordable sign companies is important.
Although the cost of these changes is a valid point of concern, there are other issues as well. Many believe that the new changes will provide the public with more safety on the roads. MUTCD, also referred to as the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, plays a role in these regulations. This manual sets standards for traffic signs and parking signs. Let's take a look at the compliance standards changes that are coming soon.
Increased letter size
In January 2012, specific changes to street signs will be completed. The letter size of signs with speed limits will increase. Sizes will go from 4 inches to 6 inches on signs that are over 25 miles per hour. There are benefits related to increasing letter size on these signs. Allowing drivers the ability to see the speed limit more clearly will help ensure that speed limits are maintained. This size increase could also prevent accidents where speed is involved.
New reflective letters
Letter sizes are not the only changes that will be enforced on these signs. Cities will also find that by January 2018, new reflective letters will become mandatory. These reflective letters are another safety addition to signs. They allow drivers and pedestrians to see signs more clearly. Reflective letters are more visible, especially at night. They will make driving on streets and highways easier.
Street name sign changes
There will be other mandatory changes to street signs. For example, street signs can no longer be in all capital letters. This change applies to any street sign changes. Replaced signs will follow the new requirements and mandates. Cities will find that complying with these new guidelines is beneficial to the safety of their citizens.
