Tempe House Painters - Types of Paints
Multicolor Paint
These latex-based coatings contains two non mixing pigments.
Depending on the formulation, they produce a tonal variation
or a flecked appearance that conceals uneven or slightly damaged surfaces. Multicolor paint can be used on any surface that takes latex paint. Choose a brand that can be brushed or rolled on and does not require spraying. Any alkyd, latex or oil-based paint can be applied over a
multicolor paint, but two coats may be needed to hide it.
Drip-less Paint
This Alkyd coating is prepared in a consistency so thick that it will not drip from a brush or roller, making it useful for painting ceilings or high, hard-to-reach places. The thick paint will usually cover any surface in a single coat, but it is considerably more expensive than conventional alkyds and more of it is required to cover a given area. Though this paint will not drip, it will spatter if it is carelessly applied; and its thickness makes it somewhat difficult to remove. Be sure to clean up tools and spills while
they are still wet.
Fire-retardant Paint
This flat paint slows down the spread of fire inside a house by puffing up into a foamy insulating layer when exposed to high temperatures. The insulation helps to keep paint film from flaring-as most paints will do-and also temporarily prevents flammable material underneath, such as wood studs and joist, from reaching the kindling point.
Fire-retardant paint is particularly valuable in garages and basements. Follow exactly the instructions supplied by manufacturer, especially in controlling the thickness of coating; if the coating is too thin, it will not provide adequate protection;if it is too thick, it may fall away in case of a fire. Some manufacturers suggest that their coatings not be washed because the puffing ingredients are water soluble; be sure to check the label.
Fire-retardant paints can be applied over any surface that is suitable for latex (and over bare wood. provided a perfectly smooth finish is not essential). Conventional paints should not be used over fire-retardant paint because they impair its effectiveness.
Sand and Texture Paints
These paints dry to rough rather than smooth surface that lends an unusual texture to walls and ceilings and also helps hide flaws. Sand paints simply regular latex paint mixed with sand or a sand like synthetic. It creates a fine-grained, glare-free texture that is attractive on ceilings but has a grittiness that limits its use to surfaces not likely to be touched.
Texture paint is an extra-dense flat latex alkyd. To get an irregular, embossed texture, apply it to a small area at a time. These paints can be applied to surfaces compatible with their latex or alkyd base. The latex type is often used on wallboard ceilings since it adheres without a primer and helps conceal seams.
Painting over sand difficulties; their rough surfaces require as much as 25% (twenty-five percent) more regular paint than usual.
