Only a few selected men are gifted with the exceptional talent of manual dexterity. For these men, tasks that require hand, finger, and wrist movements are accomplished safely and gracefully. This includes shaving. The rest of the male population, however, are not as gifted. Thus, when they shave their facial hair, they run into cuts, nicks, and abrasions from time to time. In most cases, this occurs because of a lack of hand control. At times, it is caused by using blades or razors that are no longer sharp or that are not ergonomically designed. Those who use mens electric shavers, however, tend to say that regardless of whether they have manual dexterity or not, they experience less cuts, nicks, and abrasions. Some do not experience these at all.

Mens electric shavers are not known to cause accidental cuts or abrasions on the skin, especially if they are properly used. Unlike conventional methods of shaving (such as wet shaving) and traditional razors, electric razors are very safe to use. They are also quick acting.

However, just as in any other method of shaving, electric razors still can open pores and irritate the skin surface a little bit. This is most likely to happen if the blade cuts the hair so close to the skin, especially if no lubrication is used. Earlier models of electric razors do not require the use of lather or lubricating products. Many recent models, however, are capable of operation together with lather or lubrication.

To remedy the minor irritation and/or abrasion, many men use aftershave. The recommended aftershave is one that has antiseptic properties and moisturizing properties. Good aftershave must contain an antiseptic agent, such as ethyl or isopropyl alcohol, to prevent infectious organisms from entering through the skin cuts or abrasions. Although moisturizing ingredients can be considered optional, a good aftershave often includes them, as they help in keeping the skin soft after shaving. Scent or fragrance is optional in an aftershave, too, although men usually prefer aftershave that has scent to make their skin smell pleasant after shaving.

Thus, aftershave and mens electric shavers are good partners. Those are basically the only two important things you need to shave your facial hair safely and effectively.
