Between Biometric Technology and Password

Biometric technology that is capable of recognizing human beings through fingerprints

, eyes, or the distinctive character of other body parts is now increasingly popular in the community. Supported by the increasingly affordable price factor and can be applied to many sectors, this technology displaces password as the entrance which had a weakness.

'Sixth Day' movie (2001) that is starred by Arnold Schwarzenegger already showed how biometric can replace a lock. Fingerprints or eyes can be used as an access opening into office space and laboratories. Even, they can be used to start the car or pay for taxis. Nowadays, the self-recognition technology truly recognizes the owner physically, so that there is no longer a password.

Indeed, the password has a weakness. It must be remembered by the holder of the password. Also, it is too predictable because according to security experts, there are now cracking tools that can scan a word and guess the password in the form of a combination of letters and numbers.

"LoftCrack" is one of the programs that can solve the password. This program only takes 48 hours to search the entire password archives in an enterprise.

In this case, biometric system is more sophisticated approach, instead of a password. Human parameters, known as biometrics can not be eliminated, forgotten, or transferred from one person to another. It is also difficult to be imitated.

The application of biometric technology can be exemplified as when you give free passes to the office or access to a computer using a fingerprint scanner; when you take money from cash machines using the scanner of eyes to recognize that you are the rightful owner of the money; when you identify yourself to the bank by phone using voice recognition; and when you check in for flights with only through a camera at the airport that identifies you as a passenger to subscribe.

In the future, biometric technology will be similar to the phenomenon of the computer which then becomes part of everyday life. All work processes in the office such as accounting activities, report making, the bidding of the contract signing, and many other things would presumably involve biometric technology.
