Beware! Ignoring Symptoms Of Tmj Disorders Can Be Dangerous
Since the TMJ or the temporomandibular joint is situated so near to so many vital
organs like the eye, palate, neck, tongue, ear, shoulder etc, it can lead to various signs and symptoms that make it very clear when something is wrong with it. However, medics who are not familiar wit the TMJ dysfunction symptoms can lead to misdiagnosis by confusing these symptoms with other ailments. Most of these organs are interlinked with the TMJ which makes the case even more complicated. For example, there is a tiny ligament known as Pinto' ligament which links the mid ear to the TMJ, this tendon can easily pass on the mid ear soreness to the temporomandibular joint and vice versa.
There are some symptoms of the TMJ dysfunction that can be easily recognized and identified; these symptoms can be termed the primary symptoms. But there are some that are not that easily recognizable and hence are termed as secondary symptoms. Here we will be discussing both the primary and secondary symptoms. We will also be discussing some unusual symptoms of the TMJ dysfunction that can easily lead to misdiagnosis.
TMJ Dysfunction's Primary Symptoms
The primary symptoms of TMJ disorder include jaw ache, facial soreness (myofascial syndrome), severe continuous headaches, hearing loss as well as ear ache. Primary symptoms also consist of inflamed temporomandibular joint accompanied with tender surrounding muscles, bones and associated ligaments. TMJ syndrome patients also suffer from the feeling of stuffiness in the sinus, in the ears and a dizzy feeling most of the time when they are awake. However, the most common and consistent primary symptoms of this syndrome are the persistent headaches, a clicking or popping sound while trying to open the jaw and bridled jaw movements or jaw locks.
TMJ Dysfunction's Secondary Disorder Symptoms
The secondary TMJ symptoms are no less severe or extreme while being compared to the primary symptoms of the TMJ syndrome. The secondary symptoms are listed below.
1) Secondary symptoms associated with the head and face area include headache of various types; migraines, sinus type headaches, cluster headaches and pain in the forehead area. Pain is also experienced in the scalp and the roots of the hair.
2) Secondary symptoms related to the eyes involve light sensitivity, hazy visions, pain in and around the eyeballs, a pressurized kind of feeling behind the eyeballs and persistent oozing of water from the eyes.
3) Symptoms related to the ears consist of hissing, buzzing, ringing and various other kinds of sound as occurs in Tinnitus. Hearing loss, pain in the ear, feelings of stuffiness in the ear or clogged ears, feeling of fullness in one or both ears are also secondary causes of TMJ dysfunction.
4) Symptoms of the mouth include painful jaw joints, bridled jaw movements and jaw locks, clicking sound while opening the jaw, haywire tongue movement, discomfort and pain in cheek, chin and mouth.
5) Secondary symptoms affecting the neck involve pain in the neck muscles and shoulder blades. It can also lead to sore and stiff back muscles that can lead to excruciating pain in the area.
6) Secondary symptoms can also occur in the throat, such as sore throat, problem in swallowing and a feeling of tightness.
TMJ Dysfunction's Unusual Symptoms
Inflammation in jaw and cheek is an unusual symptom of TMJ dysfunction. It is more visible in the side which is affected. The affected jaw generally gets swollen but the swelling rarely affects the cheek or other areas of the face. This can get caused by the congested blood vessels from where the blood can not be drained.
Numb fingers are another unusual symptom in patients above 50 and are suffering from TMJ dysfunction. However, the fortunate thing is that it is a temporary state and it goes away as suddenly as it comes.
Sometimes patients suffering from TMJ disorder experience pain in the shoulder blades. The pain starts from the neck and then gradually spreads to the shoulder. The pain is generally contained in one side of the shoulder.
There is another unusual TMJ dysfunction scenario where the person may experience continuous jaw dislocation without suffering from any accompanied pain. Patients suffering from this particular symptom need to sleep on a hard pillow that presses against the affected joint, as the joint has a tendency to get dislocated while the patient is sleeping. This generally occurs in jaws that have been misaligned for a long time and haven't received any treatment at all.
Clicking or popping sounds in the jaw is a common symptom of TMJ dysfunction and this sound can usually be heard by anyone within the radius of a foot of two, but sometimes the sound can be so loud that it can be heard by someone as faraway ad 5 feet. That is an unusual symptom. In such cases the patient can also experience severe pain just after the clicking sound. These people are scared to even laugh!
