Bhau Daji Lad Museum, A Fascinating Storehouse Of Mumbais Culture
Mumbais Dr
Mumbais Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum is the oldest such institution in the city of Mumbai. Primarily the collection of the museum focuses on the life and industrial arts of Mumbai in the nineteenth century. The history of the museum stretches back to the latter part of the nineteenth century; funds were raised from the public to exhibit the vast collection in a lavish Palladian style building featuring lofty Victorian interiors; the finished museum duly opened its doors to the public in 1872. Initially the museum was named the Victoria & Albert Museum with reference to the famous museum of that name in London; it was given its current name in 1972 in honour of Dr. Bhau Daji Lad, whose dedication and commitment were instrumental in the establishment of the museum.
The collection of the museum includes a decorative and fine arts collection which highlights the significance of the artistry and craftsmanship inherited by the diverse communities of Mumbai. The museum also features a mesmerizing compilation of dioramas and clay models that demonstrate the many communities who participated in Mumbais development, and its lifestyle and culture in the 19th and early 20th century.
The museum is organized into a number of extensive galleries each focusing on a particular aspect of Mumbais culture. The Industrial Arts Gallery displays an enthralling assortment of Indian craft masterpieces. In the 19th century Indian works of art were highly esteemed in the international markets, with local artistic traditions being modified to suit European tastes, as is evident in the items on display.
The Origins of Mumbai Gallery depicts the development of Mumbai with its evolution from a number of island swamps to an elegant and picturesque city of the 19th century with maps, photographs, water colours and lithographs.
Meanwhile the Founders Gallery focuses on the eminent individuals who contributed to the creation of the museum. Not to be missed is the collection of 19th Century Paintings and the Kamalnayan Bajaj Special Exhibitions Gallery; the latter features a changing assortment of special exhibitions of aesthetic value. Last but not least the Kamalnayan Bajaj Mumbai Gallery gives pride of place to the diverse communities who contributed to Mumbais development with depictions of its lifestyles, religious practices and leisure activities.
