Bigger in Texas: From Dallas to Forth Worth, Lone Star State Sitcoms

As the saying goes, don't mess with Texas

As the saying goes, don't mess with Texas. The country's most unique state might be known for quite a few things--big belt buckles, cowboy boots, barbecue, a fierce independent streak--but it's also been responsible for some great television entertainment, to say nothing of its appearances on the silver screen. And with so many Hollywood types looking to Austin for a great way to produce quality pictures within the United States, it makes sense that Texans and everyone else would consider some of the big cultural contributions that have come to the world at large, courtesy of one of the biggest states in the nation.

If a couple of hours with satellite tv is any indication, the truly American art right now might be the sitcom, though the reality television series is definitely gaining in momentum. With sitcoms, though, there is a friendlier, almost more optimistic look at the way that the country works. After all, it's a lot more enjoyable to spend a half-hour with the fun-loving Hills of "King of the Hill" than it is to watch another catfight on whatever special-edition of "The Bachelor" is on. And while most reality television casts feature at least one blonde-haired Texan using southern drawl to attempt to get ahead, the fact is that time watching satellite tv is better spent checking out some of the better sitcoms that are set in Texas. From the classics to the latest hits, here are some of the best.

Beavis and Butt-head: This sometimes-controversial MTV cartoon spawned a movie and countless imitators, but the two metal-loving slackers it followed to school and their dead-end jobs definitely were a precursor to some of the greatest moments in slacker culture.

Friday Night Lights: It's no secret that many Texans are die-hard sports fans, and that this passion is most frequently directed towards the sport of football. For anyone who misses the high-stakes energy of high school football, watching this film-turned-tv-series can sometimes be a bit too accurate. The ups and lows, as well as on and off-field drama, definitely all get it right.

King of the Hill: From the same man responsible for "Beavis and Butt-head," this was one of the great first cartoons to appeal to a non-teen audience. Just as witty as "The Simpsons" in its finer moments, "King of the Hill" has also managed to feature some incredibly great celebrity guest voices, as well as a reliably high-quality approach to comedy.

Dallas: The original crossover soap hit, this was following big oil tycoons and even bigger shoulder pads. While certain plot lines have been spoofed time and time again, you have to hand it to a series that pulled off the "it was all a dream" twist, something that still shows up on satellite tv from time to time.

Walker, Texas Ranger: Often playfully mocked, Chuck Norris and his action-crime series still to rake in the viewers not just States-side, but around the world. Having been broadcast in hundreds of countries since it first aired in the 1980s, catching a rerun of "Walker, Texas Ranger" is often a great chance to enjoy some over-the-top crime chases and a generally enjoyable look at a decade gone by.
