Billionaires Reuben Announce Plans for the Cucumber' Tower

In You just can't make this up news,' billionaire property developers Simon and David Reuben have announced plans for new skyscraper said to rival the Gherkin on London's skyline. The nickname for the proposed propertythe Cucumber.

The official name of the property will be 1 Merchant Square in Paddington Basin. Should the Westminster City Council approve the plans, the glass tower will reach 140 meters tall, making it London's 17th tallest building. The mixed-use tower will feature 222 flats, a 90-room boutique hotel and a roof bar that is open to the public. According to the London Evening Standard, the current plan has been substantially revised. The original plan called for over 500 flats.

The structure is part of the brothers' scheme to revitalize the Paddington Basin area of London, making it the city's newest hotspot. The area has been the subject of urban renewal projects over the years with the relocation of Marks & Spencer, among other companies, to plant its headquarters in the neighborhood.

The structure is also part of a larger urban renewal trend in London, with the construction of the Shard and Heron Towers, the Walkie-Talkie Tower in Canary Wharf, the Leaden hall "Cheese Grater" skyscraper and, of course, development for the 2012 Olympic Games.

The billionaire Reuben brothers are successful property developers in the United Kingdom, ranking on the Forbes' list of billionaires. The brothers acquired their fortune in metals before moving into private equity and real estate. The brothers own or have shares in London Oxford Airport, Metro Bank, Travelodge Hotel as well as Millbank Tower, Market Towers and Carlton House SW1.

The brothers are also noted philanthropists with involvement in the building of cancer clinics, fundraising for Haiti relief and contributors to the Royal Parks Fund.

If built, the Cucumber will open in 2016.
