Bio-mass Derived Energy To Provide 30% Of Renewable Energy In The Uk By 2020.
Energy Ministers from 23 of the world's leading economies this week (23rd April)
convened in London to accelerate the development and deployment of clean energy technology, the most notable outcome was talk of Bio-Energy and the possible opportunities it offers to Britains future energy consumption.
The UK has a binding target under the European Commissions Renewable Energy Directive to source 15% of our overall energy from renewable sources by 2020 and Bio-Mass energy has the potential to provide about 30% of the 2020 target. Already, the renewable energy sector has investments in the pipeline totalling over 1.75bn for UK biomass technologies, which will create almost 5,000 new jobs. A report by the UK's National Centre for renewable materials and technologies, suggests it could support as many as 50,000 jobs by 2020.
Biomass Energy is one of the most versatile forms of low carbon and renewable energy generation technologies. It can be used to produce heat, electricity and fuel for transport and can be used in many different ways, from household installations, to large scale community projects providing a continuous and constant flow of energy. Biomass energy can also help us make use of wastes that are currently being sent to landfill.
Sources of biomass
There are a wide variety of biomass sources in the UK and are generally derived from the following:
virgin wood from the conventional management. of trees. This includes thinning, felling and coppicing of sustainably managed forests, parks and urban trees;
wood residues from sawmills and other wood processing industries;
agricultural energy crops such as short rotation coppice (SRC), or miscanthus (a tall, woody grass) which may be grown on land unsuitable for food crops;
agricultural residues such as straw, husks and kernels;
wet waste including sewage sludge, animal manure and food waste that would otherwise be disposed of in landfill.
organic biodegradable proportion of municipal solid waste, commercial and industrial waste, and construction and demolition waste.
Government incentives are available for households looking to install a biomass heating system. The Renewable Heat Premium Payment Scheme offers a one time grant payment of 950, which can be ideal if you live in areas without access to a mains gas supply, a biomass boiler can offer savings of nearly 600 a year when compared to electric heating
An even more compeling reason to install biomass technology is a regular payment under the Renewable Heat Incentive which will pay per kWh of heat produced by the technology. This scheme is due to be rolled out in October 2012, and will be paid for 20 years from the date of installation. The exact payment is yet to be announced for households however businesses who have installed biomass technology can currently claim upto 7.6p per kWh produced.
For farmers in the UK there is on offer an Energy Crops Scheme, this scheme is a grant to establish miscanthus and short rotation coppice for their own energy use or to supply power stations. The rate of grant being paid is 50% of all eligible costs incurred.
What are the benefits?
Biomass Energy has a wide range of benefits, including:
helping to mitigate climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions;
providing very cost-effective energy, relative to other renewable technologies;
providing a controllable energy supply, so balancing intermittent technologies such as wind and solar;
reducing our reliance on imports of fossil fuels, giving us a more secure energy supply. This also helps reduce the impact of changes in global oil & gas supplies and their prices;
creating green jobs across the fuel supply chain, particularly in rural areas.
