Biogas from Spoiled Vegetables and Kitchen waste - CSIR - IMMT Technology

Biogas from Spoiled Vegetables and Kitchen waste

Recently I visited CSIR Technofest 2010 showcased by Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, New Delhi, at India International Trade Fair in New Delhi, the Capital of India. In this technofest, I came to know that there isa technology "Biogas from Spoiled Vegetables and Kitchen waste" which was developed by Institute of Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology (IMMT), Bhubaneshwar, under the aegis of CSIR, New Delhi, India.

Any spoiled material gives some kind of gas. I came to know that Kitchen wastes and spoiled vegetables are also giving the biogas. Initiallydecomposed & spoiled vegetables and kitchen wastes are minced to pulp in a mincing machine. The pulp undergoes for ultra-sound treatment for ten minutes for faster generation of bio-gas before charging to reactor. Otherwise the minced vegetables are charged to bio-gas reactor for generation of biogas. Biogas obtained from specific reactors contains 70-80% methane. The methane rich biogas can be used for clean burning, cooking and heating without smoke and pollution. The biogas is as good as LPG for cooking. Wastes from vegetable market or colony houses can be converted into clean cooking gas without waste management.

Spoiled vegetables & kitchen wastes are the raw materials for producing the biogas generation. Other materials like mild steel angle, sections, electric motor for mincing machine & reactors are used for this biogas production.

The spoiled vegetables are minced to pulp bellow 10 mm size in an efficient mincing machine and this machine design was developed by IMMT, Bhubaneshwar. The pulp is charged to the specific bio-gas reactor. Methane enriched biogas are generated within 30days. 5kg/day decomposed vegetables is sufficient to burn in clean blue flame in any domestic gas burner for one hour for cooking & heating, as good as LPG gas. The spent sludge is mostly gray liquid, which can be re-charged with feed materials to reduce water consumption.

This biogas generation from mincing machine and bio reactor can be started under small scale industry. The Knowhow, engineering drawings, jig and fixture, training and demonstration for fabrication will be provided by IMMT, Bhubaneshwar. There is a huge demand forbiogas generation from spoiled vegetables and kitchen wastes in the rural sector. Nearly one lakh units are estimated demand for bio reactors and minchers for the biogas generation.
