Birds do it, bees do it / even educated fleas do it / let's do it, let's get trained

Whatever you do in life, however you spend your time, you'll probably do it better if you have some training. Sports men and women spend a huge proportion of their working time training and practicing, professional people are now required to adhere to an annual programme of continuing professional development (CPD) and wherever you look these days people are seeking or being offered training. This morning I read that the parents of children in Scotland who have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) could soon be offered special parenting classes to learn about behavioural training.

Providing training for employees not only helps them develop their skills and knowledge, but it is also motivational and a building block to organizational success. It's especially important to ensure that business skills are well honed during these challenging times.

A recent report from the Alliance Skills Monitor, produced by the Sector Skills Councils, found that almost three-quarters of employers believe controlling costs is the most pressing challenge facing their managers and leaders. But increasing business efficiency and maintaining staff morale was a close second.

In terms of training and development almost a quarter of respondents still anticipate having to cut investment on training and staff development in the next three months, although this is an improvement on six months ago when this figure was 32%. Companies choosing to invest in this area over the next three months appear to be developing more senior staff. Over half see their key spending priorities for staff training and development over the next three months as leadership and management training, followed by health and safety training (45%).

I've been doing absolutely loads of employment law training, especially managing the disciplinary process and tackling sickness absence over the last two months. This investment reflects the survey's findings that 64% of respondents cited people management skills as being the most important management and leadership skills to their organisation, followed by business planning skills. People management skills may be especially important to organisations during a recession especially if they have made redundancies and need to ensure work is being completed with a reduced workforce. Mae sure you invest in a copy of How to Get Top Marks in Managing Poor Work Performance to tease out the best from your people.

The main drivers of the need for management and leadership skills development are increased competitive pressures, followed by new legislative or regulatory requirements. Increased competitive pressures are likely to be a result of the economic downturn as companies have had to continually work on their competitive edge in order to attract customers.
