Bladder Weakness – The Kegel Connection
For many women, incontinence and bladder weakness is caused by a weakening of the pelvic floor muscles
. These muscles are designed to support and protect organs located in the lower abdomen, including the bladder, and when they become weakened or simply lose their tone women can become susceptible to stress incontinence. This is a fairly common situation particularly among women who have been through multiple pregnancies and child birth. The trauma associated with giving birth can wreck havoc on the pelvic floor muscles.
So what to do? Well, just like any muscle group, if you exercise it you can regain tone and strength. Kegel exercises were specifically developed to work this set of muscles and while it takes a bit of time to see results, they are quite effective.
First you have to find these muscles and that's easier said than done. Remember these muscles are in the lower abdomen but should not be confused with your abdominal muscles. Doing a hundred crunches will do absolutely nothing for you pelvic floor muscles. To "find" them, try stopping the flow of urine the next time you use the bathroom. If you can feel the muscles then you have found the group. An alternative method is to insert a finger in your vagina and then squeezing.
Once you have identified the muscles then it's a matter of exercising them. Kegel exercises are isometric so no special equipment is required. Try contracting and holding the muscles for 5 seconds and then slowly release them. Do this ten times. Over time increase the length of time that you contract and the number of reps. It will take about three months of regular exercise to see real improvement in your bladder weakness but it will be well worth your while and your urinary incontinence will be a thing of the past.
