I've been blogging 2000, and during the first few years, it was easy to get traffic. That changed in 2004, and because there are so many more blogs now, getting a consistent flow of targeted traffic is very challenging. However, your blog's success is in your own hands. Let's see how you can get more traffic.

It's important to create as much content as possible. The more content you create, the more traffic you will get. This is the reason that A-list blogs post many times a day. Some of these major blogs produce 10 or more articles each and every day. Of course they have a staff of writers, but it shows you that if you want a high-traffic blog, you need the content.

You should, then, plan your blog's content in advance. Create a month-long editorial calendar so you can be sure to create information-rich material that will appeal to different interests in your audience.

You should keep in mind that each person who comes to your blog is not like any of the others and has his or her own wants, needs and interests. Big-time bloggers therefore create personas: imaginary people who are similar to their perceived audiences.

For example, let's say you have a dog training blog. To start creating your personas, think about who these people might be: your audience will include people who've just purchased a new puppy, people who are having behavioral problems with their dog, and people who just like to read about dogs -- they may have a dog or they may not, but they like information about dogs.

It shouldn't be too hard to come up with these personas: How much money do they make? Do they have kids? What do their homes look like? What else do you imagine about them?

When you have imagined these people thoroughly, it will be easy to write your posts because you can imagine you are talking to them.

In addition to creating personas and content, you also need to pay attention to your blog's RSS feeds, the most important part of your traffic building efforts. Somehow, though, many bloggers forget about them.

Find as many blog directories as you can. Follow the steps to add your newsfeed to them. Over time, your blog's traffic will grow.
