Border Governors Convened to Discuss on US Immigration Reform

The border governors from U.S

The border governors from U.S. and Mexico convoked recently to determine the need for reform of U.S. immigration policies. The New Mexico governor, Bill Richardson, stated during the meeting that until November when the general election is intended to be held, it is impractical to expect Congress to make efforts at reforming the U.S. immigration policies.

The border governor's meeting was actually scheduled to be held in Phoenix previously. However, due to the Mexican governors' planned boycott over the new Arizona immigration law, the meeting was cancelled by the Arizona governor, Jan Brewer. The border governors meeting had seven participants. Six of them were from six different Mexican states and Richardson was the only governor from the U.S.

During the meeting, a joint statement was made by the border governors. The governors expressed the need for a complete immigration reform. They stated that the basic principle of respecting human rights has brought them together to work on the US immigration reform. They added that the lack of coordination or exchange of information between the federal governments of both the countries has made them convene to discuss on the improvements that can be made on border crossings.

From the statement made by Richardson, it is evident that he hopes the foundation for the US immigration reform would be laid by Congress soon after the general election in November. He also said that Congress would hopefully prioritize the much needed immigration reform next year.

Richardson made clear at a press conference that the US immigration reform is not the responsibility of the partisans alone and that it should be a nation-wide effort. He further added that the immigration reform should impact those companies who employ illegal immigrants to work for them. Finally, he said that the new U.S. immigration policies should legalize those illegal immigrants who pay the back taxes promptly and also learn or know English.
