Experts of brain growth say if you are a person of great intelligence and experience, your brain does not work as hard as those with less intelligence and experience do. You do not have to think as hard. Your brain is basically on autopilot. Having a brain on autopilot is both an advantage and disadvantage. Your brain on autopilot allows you to work faster with greater efficiency. You sacrifice creativity with an autopilot brain.

The downside is you do not stop and evaluate if what you are doing is the most effective way of doing things. You need times when you make conscious and deliberate choices. You can't do that when you are on autopilot.

Leaders should on occasion bring in a third party to shake things up to help people see new ideas and perspectives. You as a leader may have mistaken assumptions and cannot see it. Fresh eyes will help you see it. What is difficult is when your brain tells you that you are making correct decisions when in fact you are not. Always making correct decisions is extremely difficult if not impossible. At least do not go on autopilot for the most important decisions. Study those decisions out with the facts and information you have. What you are most certain about could be untrue.

Becoming emotional makes it easy to enter into autopilot mode. You make decisions instantly without thinking through it deliberately. The limbic system, which includes the amygdala, is activated in a major way during times of danger. When this happens, you have a hard time consciously choosing to act rationally or deliberately. The fight or flight phenomenon happens. Or you may freeze when you should take action.

A skill that will help you when you enter into autopilot mode is to count to 10 before you act. This allows you to create a pause, increasing your ability to act correctly.

Another way to increase your agency during the fight or flight times is to consciously redirect your mind to something else. You might ask yourself a question. Examine your feelings. Your feelings are caused by your beliefs. To change your feelings change your beliefs.

Researches doing brain growth research learned that Oxytocin might cause you to trust people unworthy of your trust. Oxytocin is a hormone that creates trust. Avoid putting your trust in people with your same interests and passions. Doing this leaves the door open to overlooking their character.
