It's a funny thing to think of broadband as specific to a time of year since internet access is necessary at all times of the year

However, there's nothing like a new year to bring out in people the instinct towards new resolutions and new plans and, knowing this, broadband companies often see this as a time to bring out deals and new special offers to tempt consumers.

Broadband deals are fast becoming one of the most competitive markets in terms of utilities and small companies offering excellent customers service or specialist services are just as viable for thousands if not millions of consumers than are the big brands which are also hawking TV and a wide range of phone services.

This is also the case in the mobile broadband market where a number of mobile phone operators hold sway in addition to many established home broadband companies which are looking to consolidate their reputation for providing an internet access service.

In that atmosphere, then, there is a lot of incentive for providers to offer eye-catching offers, particularly as people look to move their services within the new year.

So what should the prospective broadband customer be looking out for? Well, there are three things to note.

The first is that there is absolutely no point making a comparison between providers without a postcode search to see which deals are available in the particular area.

Broadband is area specific so without that initial check you could look at a provider which is not available to you. That's a waste of your time since, wherever you are, there are likely to be at least three providers which are worth your while comparing.

The second point is that with the postcode search done you should seek an expert opinion before signing up.

Having a look at a BT Infinity review, for example, can tell you about the fees and charges which come up with that deal which would otherwise be a mystery since they are hidden within the small print of the providers website if they are specifically mentioned at all.

The last point is that offers should be taken with a pinch of salt.

They can often be a re-jigged way of saying nothing at all: months for free, for example, are often accompanied by a penalty fee of the same value as the months in which the customer has avoided a monthly fee. Again, a good review can help customers in this regard.
