Buckthorn Removal Techniques That Work

There are a number of ways in which various invasive buckthorn species (Rhamnus spp.)

can be removed.You first have to make sure you have this pesky shrub before you undergo steps for buckthorn removal.

The different ways destroy this pesky shrub include pulling them out with your hands or any other tools, using herbicides and burning. A way to control buckthorn biologically is not yet discovered. So don't consider biocontrol as a choice.

A weed wrench (a common tool used to pull small trees and shrubs out of the ground), is useful in the case of small shrubs. Because this technique does not pollute the environment, it is considered to be an ideal method, even though it's cumbersome. Small and shallow root systems of these shrubs make it possible to remove them with a garden tool or with bare hands. Applying tricolypr (Glorin) to the shrub's cut stump is a really effective method as well.

Another effective way to remove the infestation of buckthorn is to use a herbicide called tricolypr, also called Glorin. Before this chemical is used, cut the plant and then apply tyriclopyr to the stump.

Yet another option is fire which is effective, but of course dangerous. Extreme care should be taken not to burn nearby property and immediate access to water source is necessary. The seeds are completely destroyed by the fire. Burning should be repeated every year so as to kill the established shrubs. This can be done until the natural fire adapted native species come back.

Burning is another method to remove the plant. Fire destroys the seeds completely but the plants along with its underground roots are not eradicated. When the right time comes they sprout again. A solution to this problem is to burn them every year till other plants take over their place. While burning the seeds, make sure that there is a water source nearby so as to bring the fire under control if the fire breaks out of your control. The seeds can remain dormant for five years and they can sprout at any time and make a come back.

Before going forward with any of these techniques, its better to read and collect more information on the species of buckthorns so as to get a better idea about what exactly you are getting yourself into. Selecting a method best for the situation is up to you, just put a keen eye on the consequences of each one.
