Is it possible to really build your own house? Definitely! I did and I'm ecstatic with the results. There are thousands of people reaping the massive benefits of building their own homes all over the country. Should you build your own house? At the time most people think of buying their own home, they look at purchasing homes that are already built. The biggest problem with this approach is that you're paying full price for a house that you'll have to either renovate to increase the value or you'll have to work harder to reduce your mortgage payments. When you build your own house, you're cutting tens of thousands of dollars off the cost of buying an already-established home. This means you're paying a wholesale price for a brand new house that will still be appraised at a completed value. That's an instant equity gain that you get to keep. What's even better is that when you choose to build a house, your mortgage repayments are based only on what you borrowed to buy the home. This means that you'll be saving thousands of dollars in mortgage repayments each year because you'll owe so much less. How difficult is it to build your own house? When I told people I was going to build my house myself they were shocked and couldn't get their heads around how much work would be involved. Most friends and family members shook their head and said "It's easier to just buy one." Yes, it might be easier, but that doesn't mean I'll get a better result by buying an old home that someone else didn't maintain or repair properly. After all, what if they've only patched the electricals or the plumbing only to break down the moment I move in? I'd prefer to know that by building my own house I've bought a brand new house, which means less maintenance and repairs for me, but it also means I know what's gone into it. Another great reason to build your house is that you get to design a plan that suits your lifestyle. You get to choose how many rooms you have and how big they'll be. What the flow of the floor plan will be like. Who should do the construction? Despite not having ever built anything before, learning the basic construction principles you need to know isn't difficult. When you buy your building materials, many of the hardware suppliers will happily offer pointers and tips. You can also research anything you need on the internet. You don't need to be a Master Builder or anything like that. You just need to know a little about wielding a hammer and using a spirit level and measuring tape to keep things straight.
