Build for a Greener Future with Green Schools

Build for a Greener Future with Green Schools

North American governments have shown great enthusiasm about building green weather it's private residences or public institutions such as schools, universities or collages. In the United States and Canada, numerous sources of funding for green building are available at the national, state and local levels for homeowners, industry, government organizations and nonprofits. However, with the current state of the economy and the housing market there has been a regression back to the old ways of building without much emphasis on the environment. Sadly the governments' role of leadership when it comes to energy efficiency has been substantially diminished. Without the government leading the way its difficult to say whether there is enough momentum with the green movement to achieve any real success in the private sector.

Naturally, people tend to be reluctant about trying new things especially when it comes to such large purchases as homes and other real estate. It is therefore the role of the government to pioneer these new innovations and encourage citizens to embrace change. With respect to green schools, which are built using hollow core slabs and precast concrete to take advantage of thermal energy storage that provides homes with radiant heating in the winter and radiant cooling in the summer at a fraction of the cost, the government has taken some steps in the right direction. Most new schools built in the past couple of years have been built using green building principals. However, the jury is still out on how well the stack up against traditional schools with respect to performance and energy usage. Hopefully, once there is more statistical data that illustrates the green way's superiority to the ways of old, people will eagerly jump on board.

The state of the economy is the factor that can make or break this movement depending on how the government chooses to react. Unfortunately our government has decided to jump ship at the first sight of trouble from the economy and abandon most previously offered incentives for building green. This defies logic because if the state of the economy is so bad shouldn't we be trying to save money any way we can? Building green schools as well as eco-friendly, energy efficient smart homes will help us save billions in energy costs in the short run and can completely alleviate our dependence on non-renewable sources of energy. Paving the way for this movement through government endorsed green school projects will allow our children to be at the heart of our effort to make their future brighter and greener. So call your congressman and demand they adress this issue because nothing is more important than our children. Our children are our future and their future is green schools.
