The city has a rich history and is known to be under existence since ages. The city was ruled by several emperors and rulers. The city also has a significant part in the Hindu history. Some of the rulers and dynasties of the land are as follows, Kadambas, Vijaynagar Dynasty, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Hoysalas and the Portuguese. The city is a melting pot of different cultures, traditions, and languages. The city has people who speak different languages which are, Tulu, Konkani, Kannada and Beary Bashe.

The city is blessed with the lush green natural look and is the eighth cleanest city of the country and second most in Karnataka. The city of Mangalore has a booming economy and has shown a progress in the past few decades. The agricultural processing and the port related activities have main part in the economy of the city. Some of the important firms of the city include, Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers Limited, Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Limited, Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemical Limited, BASF, and Total Oil India Limited. Some of the major outsourcing IT companies have established themselves here, such as Infosys, Wipro, and Mphasis BPO.

The city is also the education center of the state as the city has a good number of schools, colleges, universities and other educational institutes.
