Building A Fence - Do It Yourself And Save

You have been thinking about enclosing your property for a while now especially if you have pets that roam around in your backyard

. One thing to note is that proper planning is required. Guidelines on how to build a fence can be found online for free or at minimal cost for professionally prepared plans but you need to consider the following before you start this project. If you obtain free plans, be sure to have them professionally reviewed first.

1. Community

A permit is usually required by many localities before a fence can be installed so this is the first step that you need to undertake. In addition, if you belong to a home owner's association you will also need to get approval from them before you proceed building a fence.

2. Blueprints

Without a good set of plans you will be guessing as to how much material you actually need and you may find yourself halfway through your project without any materials or money left. The blueprints should also state what kind of tools you need that you may be able to borrow.

3. Frost line

You will need to know where your frost line is and to dig your holes well below this level so that freezing temperatures do not cause havoc with your installed post. Related to aesthetics, it is important that you accurately locate each hole and align your posts perfectly with one another to prevent your fence looking a mess.

Your starting posts will be the end posts. Set the up and use a string to stretch from one end to the other to create a perfect line. After this, you will need to drive a stake every 6 to 8 feet along this line while measuring the spacing to ensure that the posts are equally spaced.

After this, align you posts with the string and make sure they are level vertically and brace them while the cement sets up. Leave them alone for two to three days to become secure before adding the fencing. Use screws to secure the fencing instead of nailing the fence. Nailing the fencing may result in the nails possibly coming loose which is not desirable. Seal the completed fence so that it will last for many years.

It is important to remember that a good set of instructions for building a fence are obtained which are preferably drawn up by a professional. With good plans, you can get this project completed in a weekend.
