Building A Small Greenhouse - It's Easier Than You Think
Building A Small Greenhouse - It's Easier Than You Think
If you have made the decision to make a greenhouse of your own but just don't have the where with all or money to build anything extravagant, you might want to think about setting up a small greenhouse (hobby house), in your garden. Not only are they very effective, comparatively low priced, and incredibly efficient, but their easy to maintain as well.
Hobby greenhouses really are where it's at these days. If it can be built large, it can be built small. And it can do everything it's larger counter-part can do too, just on a smaller scale. All of the wonderful benefits that a greenhouse provides the serious gardener such as controlled heating environment, light exposure, and protection from the elements at large, can be accomplished beautifully with a small greenhouse design!
These small structures do an admirable job of prolonging the growing season, providing a terrific shelter for your plants during the colder months. And making your own hobby house couldn't be easier! Everything you'll need to build it can be purchased at your local DIY center at a very reasonable cost (the materials to build a 10'x8' greenhouse can be gathered for about 150 bucks or so). If you decide to use PVC tubing for the frame, you can build your house a little bigger for the same amount.
Personally, I think constructing a smaller greenhouse out of PVC and heavy plastic wrap is the way to go. They're super easy to set up, and if built correctly, they will last a long time. I recommend using 1/2" diameter tubing for the frame and 6 mil greenhouse plastic for the glazing material. Whether you decide on constructing a hoop style house or a more traditional vertical sided structure, these materials will give you a nice finished product.
If you don't want to go through the trouble of rounding up the materials needed for the build yourself, a hobby greenhouse kit might appeal to you. They come pre-packaged with everything you'll need for the set up and are generally a snap to set up. The only drawback is they tend to be on the expensive side. Even mini greenhouse kit (8'x6'), can run you in excess of a $1000. I don't know about you but I would much rather spend a few extra hours rounding up the materials and locating a solid set of easy to follow plans myself. Seriously, with the money you'll save you can send yourself on a nice little vacation!
Greenhouse gardening is a hobby that will pay you back many fold. Not only will you reap the rewards of producing your own healthy and delicious food, but it's just plain good for the soul. If more people would step away from the rat race that is modern life for even a couple extra hours week and invest themselves in becoming more connected with the earth by setting up a small greenhouse of their own, we would all be a lot better off. So get out there and do it. You'll be glad you did.
