Tree houses dont have to be just small forts for kids to play in

They are the type of material which is used in a flat pack house and their versatility and portable "assemble on location" nature makes them very practical for this purpose.

The Advantages of SIPs


There are many advantages to using structural insulated panels to build your tree house, or for any other building project for that matter. Their composition, of rigid foam insulation between oriented strand boards, makes them very strong and flexible.

It is said that a flat pack house built with SIPs is twice as strong as traditional wood-framed construction, and when you are building up in a tree this is important. The structure becomes a monolithic whole, which will stand up well to wind and weather.

Also, SIPs are very well insulated so that if you will be heating your tree house to enjoy in the winter, you will spend less money on energy.

Tips for Building Your Tree house

If you are planning on constructing a tree house of your own, here are some helpful tips which will get you started.

The first step is to find a tree on your property which is sturdy enough to support the tree house. Assess the strength of the tree, and its overall health. The tree does not have to hold up all of the weight of the tree house, as it can be also supported with posts, but it should hold up at least some of the weight without the possibility of breaking or bending.

The tree house should not be too high, as it would be dangerous if someone fell from it. 10 feet from the ground is a good guideline.

Check the building laws in your area to make sure that you are allowed to build a tree house. There might be building codes that forbid you from building, or restrict it to a certain size.


Plan out the design of your tree house, and make several sketches. You can look at photographs of other tree houses in similar trees for inspiration, but each house will be one of a kind as each tree is unique!
