First, you would collect the wood rounds, lumber to frame the doors and windows, roofing materials and mortaring materials. Sand, cement, sawdust, paper and lime can be used for the mortar.

Just like any other building, the foundation must be done before anything else. Choose the best foundation to match the location of the building. If the construction has to pass an inspection and meet the building codes in your area, then it is highly likely that concrete will be needed for the foundation. Remote areas offer more flexibility, because you could dig a narrow trench alongside the building perimeter and fill the hole with rocks until it extends slightly over the grade level. After that, the wall could be built on top.

After finishing the foundation, it is time to build the walls. Ensure that all the spaces are filled up if large timbers are used to create a frame for the structure. The walls for wooden houses should have a thickness that can stand up to the climate. If the construction is without a timber frame, you could opt for a log cabin style and build interlocking corners. Place the different pieces of cord wood randomly or according to a planned design to get a tight fit and a design that is more pleasing to the eyes.

When adding the windows and doors to the structure, you should place a frame along the wall starting at the opening on the lowest level. Next, stack and mortar the cord wood on the side until you reach the top section of the frame.

Lastly, you can choose a roof style based on your personal taste, the structure, environment and location. The roofing material for cord wood houses can be tin types, earthen types or just about anything.

Overall, cord wooden houses are easy to build and they can be extremely affordable. Today, these houses are excellent solutions for persons who are living off grid.
