Business Networking: Commitments, Energy and Trust
Business Networking: Commitments, Energy and Trust
Do you keep your commitments to others, and to yourself? Do you realize the energy drain and the damage to trust when you fail to? Do you understand the special importance of a commitment made to someone you have just met at a networking event?
A commitment is a promise and is usually preceded by the words "I will." I will exercise every other day, I will avoid eating fried foods, I will call you back in 10 minutes, I will meet you at 9 AM, I will introduce you to Mary Smith. We make bigger commitments too, but often it is the little ones that we fail to recognize as commitments, especially when we are the only one that knows about them. In your relationship with others, failing to keep a commitment leads to a breakdown in trust. In your relationship with yourself, it leads to a drain on your energy that you probably don't even realize is there. Failure to keep a commitment made to someone you have just met at a networking event pretty much guarantees you will lose all credibility with them.
Here are 7 ways to release your blocked energy, start rebuilding trust, and guard your credibility:
Decide what your priorities are. There are limits to what you can commit to, and to know those limits you must first know what your goals and priorities are. When you are presented with a situation, test and see whether making a commitment in that area will move you toward or away from your goals.
Think before you speak. It is much more important to take a moment to think about the commitment that was about to come rushing out of your mouth, than to say something in haste and then fail to keep it later. Remember you are making a promise. Do you really intend to do what you are about to say?
Be precise in your commitment. Avoid weak words like "I'll try." When you decide to make a commitment, use strong and precise words and then keep that promise exactly.
Keep the commitment every time. Whether the commitment seems small are large, it is crucial that you follow through on what you promised. You will develop great trust in yourself, and others will develop respect for you, when you can always be counted on to keep your word.
If for some reason you are unable to keep the commitment, apologize to yourself or to the other person right away and offer to make amends. Recognize that you have broken a promise and damaged trust and credibility.
Clear blocked energy by releasing yourself from un-kept past commitments. If there are important promises you made to someone else in the past, apologize for not keeping your commitment and ask if there is anything you can do at this point to make it right. Much of your blocked energy may be coming from all the little commitments you make to yourself and then fail to keep because you feel you are unimportant and not worth keeping a commitment to. It is very important to your self-esteem and your energy that you keep the commitments you make to yourself.
Tell your personal commitments to someone who can help you keep them. If you commit to never eating fried foods, tell your spouse and give him permission to remind you of that commitment when you are about to order the fried shrimp!
Commitments are promises. Make them using sound judgment, keep them using strong character. You will have more energy and the people you relate to will hold you in high esteem.
