Buying Furniture For A Small Space

When you buy the right furniture for small spaces

, the space won't look nearly as small. Thinking ahead when purchasing helps a great deal in bringing home the best furniture.

Just because your space is small doesn't mean the furniture has to be. However, it's smart to choose multifunctional pieces whenever you can. A desk may double as a storage spot, so pick one that comes with an adequate number of drawers; choose a small ottoman with a lid and fill it with magazines or other items you want to keep hidden in order to create an uncluttered environment.

One of the best ways to store clothing in a small space that doesn't have a closet is with a portable wardrobe or armoire. These pieces fit neatly against a wall or in a corner. Measure the area you where you want to place the wardrobe before buying to ensure that you don't select a piece that's too large.

Homewares should not overwhelm a small space. Mirrors can create the illusion of a larger space, so choose them carefully. Instead of filling an entire wall with one large mirror, try an attractive arrangement of several mirrors placed in a complementary pattern. Light colours also make a room appear larger, so stick with light tones on the walls and on the bigger furniture pieces. Put accent pieces around the room with bits of colour if you want to add visual interest.

When fitting a sofa into a small area, it's usually best to place it against a wall. Don't select a sofa that's so big that it takes up the entire wall as this can make the space look even smaller. Instead, make sure that there's room to place a side table or two on either side of this furniture piece.

For a small bedroom, a full size bed can be just as comfortable as a queen size, but takes up much less space. Vertical items like tall dressers and armoires will take up less room than horizontal items, so select pieces that go upward instead of outward.

Besides buying the right furniture for a small space, placement is key to creating an uncluttered feel in a room. This doesn't mean everything must sit along a wall, but diagonal placement should be kept to a minimum. Save creative placement for items like small chairs or tables, while placing larger items like beds and dressers on a wall.

Even the smallest space can appear larger when you purchase the right pieces for the room and stick to colours that create the illusion of more space. You can still display your style personality in bits of bright colour here and there which will help make the most visual impact.
