Thanks to the latest developments on the World Wide Web
, the world is largely turning online. This growth and advancement has even enabled kids to enjoy certain freedom while being on the computer. In fact, it is based on the grounds that they need to be ready for future.
However, it is a known fact, what starts as curiosity slowly becomes a habit, especially with kids. Online system is visual and thus appeals at the very first instance. There are effective social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace and Orkut. While they seem purely harmless on first view, they pose a grievous problem - that of cyber bullying, in the near future.
Cyber bullying - an ever increasing threat
Children in old times would dread a bully in their classes or in a neighborhood. These days, there is a profusion of cyber bullies on the net who leave no effort in vitiating a child's mindset. Through sexual texts or pictures, or even slightly threatening messages, they leave a deep imprint on the child. Cyber bullies enjoy the advantage of largely being anonymous. Through different means and a practiced style, they start polluting a child into following certain trends. Children of certain age are in their formative years and their minds can easily be manipulated, even against their parents.
Victims of cyber bullying are ever in a dilemma; whether to reveal this fact to their parents or not. They fear that the first reaction of them would be to cut their children's access to the net or at least marginalize it. Kids also feel a sort of unwritten right on mischief over the net, as their parents must also have done some mischief in their times.
Grave consequences revealed
Grave consequences of cyber bullying may range from making a child introvert, silent, or even vicious. They may even be driven to commit suicide, if the bully has great skills. Worst thing is that parents often realize the matter long after the deed is done. This sometimes stems from the fact that these parents are alien to ways of the computer.
For parents, it is imperative to put to their kids that seeing explicit movies or reading sexual texts is bad. They may give children a certain freedom on their part by imparting sex education themselves. Parents should also keep a tab on their kid's online ventures, such as whom they talk to; what they largely do online and so on.
Helping hand extended
Certain agencies alert parents if their children are getting vulnerable to cyber bullying. There are cyber bullying campaigns too, in developing countries, such as USA, UK and Spain. The National Crime Prevention Council is a leading light in this respect.
Immediate measures to be taken
Children should not reveal their inmost details on their networking sites. Little or none of their family information should be disclosed. It is not advisable to keep a false identity either. They should keep their password complicated and make sure that they correspond online only with known people. They should also set their account settings to private and never give way to unknown people who often try to interfere in their personal lives.
