Cagliari's Number One Opera House

The Teatro Lirico di Cagliari is an opera house located in Cagliari

. This is the key theatre in the whole city. The opera house was built as a replacement to the Teatro Civico after it was heavily damaged by the shelling of Cagliari operated by the Allies during the Second World War. When the war was finished there wasn't a theatre around.

So the project for the Teatro Lirico to be built was handled by the Italian architects Luciano Galmozzi, Pierfrancesco Ginoulhiac e Teresa Ginoulhiac Arslan who won the contract in 1967.

It was inaugurated in 1993, culminating at the end of a long construction process. The theatre takes the area of 5,000 square metres. The Foyer, 1650 seats that includes stalls and circle, a stage that is expansive and the orchestra pit were the first things that were built. After the inauguration the next pieces added in were the rehearsal rooms, workrooms, store rooms and office premises. At the moment the foyer is undergoing renovation and a new bookshop, bar and restaurants are currently being built. The theatre has won national prizes over the years such as the Premio Franco Abbiati in 2001. The prize was assigned for Lucia di Lammermoor.

This is a theatre that holds many concerts through the year, the amount makes it seem like there is an endless stream of concerts held at the theatre. Every month there are 2-3 different ones held but various different composers, conductors and artists. The Opera and Ballet is also shown here the season is opened from the middle of April until the middle of December. There you will see performances of Cinderella and the ballet classic nutcracker. Most of the works are performed by many different artists with the he Teatro Lirico Orchestra and Chorus working in tandem with them and this has help rebuild the music scene in Cagliari
