California Construction Site Causes Neighboring Businesses To Close Following Accident

Apparently, heavy rains on the days prior to February 22nd had made the foundations on the Apple site unstable; after hearing what witnesses called a "very large bang" from the Apple building, it was found that two walls had semi-collapsed. There were no injuries in the accident.

George Kiskaddon, who is a partner at the business next door to the Apple construction site, Builders Booksource, stated that a side and back wall on the Apple site suddenly sank in to the ground about four feet, which resulted in one of the walls leaning against his building.

Assistant fire chief Sabina Imrie of the Berkeley fire department stated that the neighboring building was evacuated as a precautionary measure. The City building inspector was called; in the meantime, a contractor who was on the scene when the walls sank was attempting to secure and shore up the walls.

By all accounts it looked as though Apple's construction crew was digging new footings for the store, and that the walls that sank were freestanding walls that had been retained from the Slater Marinoff building, which was in the location prior to Apple constructing the new store.

Another Planet Entertainment, a business that occupies the floor above Builders Booksource, was also closed while waiting for structural engineers to rule on safety issues.

While no one was injured in this accident, the results could have been dramatically different. A construction crew member could have been seriously injured or even killed.
