California Wine Gifts For New Wine Drinkers

New wine lovers can be tough to give gifts because they're caught up in the passion

and what they do know, even though they could often stand to learn more. This is especially true for those who "love" California varietal wines. California wine varietals tend to come one of three types: chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon, and merlot. These three are in fact the most popular wines in the United States, although California does offer a number of other varietals such as Pinot Grigio, Pinot Noir, and Riesling. These wines are just as good as California's big three but they are less in-demand because of the tastes of the average wine-drinker in the United States. However, this creates a great opportunity to put together wine gift sets for California wine lovers, prominently featuring these other varietals to help them learn about what else California has to offer.

When putting together a gift basket of California wine, it does make sense to start with bottles that reflect the recipient's tastes and California's best. This usually means a Cab or merlot, and chardonnay or Zinfandel if you want one of each white and red. But these old favorites are not exhaustive. California wine country is very big, and it has a range of different wine growing characteristics. As wine growers become more familiar with the characteristics of their vineyards, their ability to pick the best varietal and hone its cultivation to perform better increases. This has been going on for a short time in wine growing years - just decades - but it has started to have a significant impact. California boasts over 100 varietals, and at least a few dozen of them are world class.

So the next step to putting together that California wine gift basket is to have a goal. What are you trying to show to the new wine lover? Most likely, you just want to help them branch out and experiment within the range of tastes and wine experiences they already know they enjoy. So assume, for example, that you know the recipient loves Cabernet Sauvignon. This hypothetical is not much of a stretch. You can deduce from this at the very least that they like intense, deep flavors, as well as that they appreciate the oak tones and hints of bell peppers that are characteristic of the California Cabs.

So you could try other bold, spicy reds varietals from California like a Brazin Zinfandel, or maybe some specific shiraz known for big, bold drinking experiences. These varietals will be different, but close enough that the recipient will be willing to try them and probably (hopefully) won't write the whole bottle off after one taste because it's not a California Cab. Plus, it might help the person to figure out more about what exactly appeals to him most.

The last thing to remember is that the newer a California wine varietal is, the more risk there is that it won't be that good. At the same time, this also means there's more opportunity to return to the wine with a new year after some time has passed and find that a lot of the weaknesses have been addresses. This is an important perspective to take when giving "educational" wine basket gifts to new wine lovers, heady with the feeling of knowing and loving the Golden State's wines.
