Campaign Trails Blaze from New York to LA with 4G
As the November 2010 elections are approaching
, political pundits and their constituents are speeding along the campaign trail. Especially with the state of the country now, people are more polarized and also more politically active than ever. In the last few years, particularly during Obama's campaign for President people have become more involved in politics. Some account in to the post-Bush era, others look to the economy taking a toll on the "average American." These are certainly contributing reasons as to why people may be becoming more involved with politics. However, there have been times when the economy has faltered in the past and there have been times when the nation was polarized across party lines. Yet never in these times have people mobilized so much, save for the 1960s.
After 20 years of low voter turn out, the 2008 election yielded a historical turnout that was exponentially more than in years past. People young and old came out, and across racial, ethnic, class demographics. This momentum has been maintained, as there are more people visibly mobilizing around this year's election and it isn't even a presidential once. So what's the difference today? Why are more people taking an interest in elections?
Many people think that the real reason behind this new political mobilization across the country is due to the advent of wireless internet and 4G. With these technologies people are connected around the clock. This gives people the forum to get political on a broader scale. People working in a campaign office in New York can instant message with people waiting to hear the poll numbers at a campaign office in Los Angeles. These, however, aren't the people we are talking about. The demographics of people who are new to the political scene have been mobilized by an increased exposure to other people's politics through online applications like facebook, twitter and myspace.
Now people from all over the country can find other like-minded individuals through the virtual spaces offered by the internet. With wireless internet people are updating statuses, creating political groups, sending out mass messages, and organizing rallies all from their touch screen phones. Obama blazed the way for this kind of political participation and did so from the hell of his young campaign staffers. They knew how to best utilize the internet to create broad based support for his election. Staffers were constantly sending out messages to organize people around the country. A door-to-door campaigner in Seattle would get encouraging campaign news instantly from campaign headquarters in Washington DC. More than the people out on the trail, everyday Americans were more involved in the campaign because they had more outlets to tap into it. With the first ever YouTube debate as well as Q & A session with the candidates, average Americans were connecting with politics in a more intimate way than ever before.
This momentum has been maintained into this November's coming elections as it is now common for candidates to have twitter accounts where they can update supporters via 4G wherever they are. A quick glance at people's facebook statuses in the coming weeks will reveal that the public is more engaged. Messages urging people to vote for preferred candidates or certain ways on issues are rampant. Even for the recent primaries, news feeds were clogged with political messages. The advent of wireless internet has brought people closer to politics and it has made organizing easier than ever.
