Camping In A Van Or Minivan- Something New

If you have a van or minivan, you have an ideal camping vehicle

. It is easy to set up your van for a weekend, week or more of outdoor fun.

First you need a bed. Take out all of the seats and measure your available floor space. In a full size van you will have plenty of room. In a minivan you will have enough space. For a minivan you will cut a piece of inch plywood to fit in your van. A full size van can use a full size piece of 4' x 8' plywood.

The next step is to buy 8 milk crates. Get sturdy ones for this is going to be the platform for your bed. Set the milk crates up on end in your van. These are the posts your mattress support.

Set your piece of plywood on top of the milk crates. You are now ready for your mattress. You may want to put a flat bedding sheet on top of the plywood to protect your "mattress". You can use any mattress you have. Thick pads are comfortable. Inflatable air mattresses are nice. You can even go for some real comfort and get a 3 or 4 inch thick memory foam pad and cut it to fit.

Your bedding can be standard sleeping bags or you can take sheets and blankets from home. Get as simple or fancy as you desire for the bed.

You now have a bed with a lot of storage area beneath it. The storage area should hold your ice chest, clothes, cooking materials and more.

You can reserve the back section for firewood. Use cut off lumber for your firewood if it travels inside with you. There is less chance of getting a few spiders and other bugs in bed with you by using lumber instead of limbs for firewood.

Camping does not always mean a campground with benches, so bring along folding chairs. These can pack on top of the bed while you are traveling. There are lightweight folding tables too. These all fit on top of the bed while you are moving from place to place.

One bit of space you can use for packing is the milk crates you have beneath your bed. Make a door for each out of cardboard. Get creative. You can hinge the door with light wire or heavy string. A very simple latch could be duct tape. Pulling one crate out from under the bed will not cause the bed to fall and you will have extra storage for many things you take along.

This idea would work in a similar manner if you have a car and a box trailer. The idea is to get your bed up off of the floor so you have a large amount of storage space beneath the bed.
