Can I Get Liposuction All Over My Body?

Liposuctions (also known as lipoplasties and suction lipectomies) are some of the most popular cosmetic surgeries in America

. The purpose of these surgeries is to remove excess fat from specific areas of the body in order to improve the body's aesthetic appeal.

This surgery is usually performed under local anesthesia, and it typically takes somewhere between one and four hours to complete. In some circumstances, the surgery is performed under general anesthesia, but signs seem to suggest that the local anesthetic is safer.

During the surgery, the doctor will numb the area which will be operated on, and then he or she will make a number of small incisions. After these incisions are made, the doctor will insert a small tool called a cannula into them. A cannula is essentially a hollow metal tube that is attached to a vacuum machine. The surgeon removes the fat by moving the cannula back and forth through the fatty tissue of the patient's body. This breaks up the fat and gives the cannula a chance to suction up the broken up fat.

Some people have fat that they would like to get rid of just about everywhere on their body. These people want to know whether or not a liposuction could help them with this sort of total-body weight loss. The answer, unfortunately, is not usually.

A lipoplasty works best when it is able to target one or just a few specific target areas. Increasing the number of areas treated drastically increases the amount of trauma that the body undergoes. Also, every area that is treated has to be numbed, and it isn't good for the body to receive too much anesthetic at a time.

If too many areas area treated at once, there is the risk of a number of different kinds of complications. Some are cosmetic in nature, and others are more severe.

In general, if you want to have total-body weight loss, it is better to begin by losing weight through diet and exercise and then to use a lipolasty for the finishing touches. This will make your surgery safer, and it will probably give you substantially better results, too.

If you would like to know more about liposuction and what it can do for you, please speak with a cosmetic surgeon in your area. Many surgeons offer free consultations to potential clients. If you speak openly with your surgeon about your goals, he or she should be able to tell you whether these are realistic and if there's anything you need to do before you qualify for the surgery.
