Can I Replace The Hot Tub Heater Myself?
Hot tubs are great, unless of course the heater stops working
. What you are left with is a small pool that would not be too fun to take a dip in during the cold months. If you happen to notice that your heater is not working, you should immediately address the problem. The worst time for this to happen is obviously during the winter, because the lines can freeze up and the entire unit can be left useless. Repairing a hot tub heater is not as difficult as it may seem, but it does require a small amount of mechanical skill. If you choose to do the job yourself, here is what you will need to do.
Replacing a
hot tub heater1.Turn everything off
2.Drain the tub
3.Disconnect the heater's power line
4.Remove and replace the heater
5.Refill the tub
The 1st step to take when replacing any part on your hot tub is making sure the power and water is turned off. You don't want anything to be running when working on machinery. It should not need to be stated that water and electricity are a bad combination if not respected. Once you have shut the power down and stopped the water from coming into the tub, you can proceed to drain it. Make sure you are in a spot where you can drain all of the water. Connect a hose to the drain valve if need be in order to prevent flooding in the surrounding area. You don't want to work on any electrical equipment with a pool of water at your feet.
After the hot tub has been completed drained, you can then remove the power line to the heater itself. Never attempt to disconnect the heater without first following this step. If for some instance the power was never disconnected, you could experience shock or hardware failure. After the line has been properly disconnected, you can begin removing all of the bolts that secure the unit in place. Be sure to take your time and keep all parts organized. Remember how everything goes back together, as you will be installing the new heater next. Many people have a habit of rushing jobs such as these, which may entail not putting all of the bolts back in due to impatience. While the unit may work in the short term, you are running the risk of issues down the road. Use common sense and take your time.
After you have installed your new heater, you can reconnect the heater line and seal everything up. You may have had to remove some of the shell panels to gain access to the internal components. Be sure that everything is in its proper place then proceed to fill the hot tub up with water. After the tub has been filled, you can turn the power back on. Give the heater some time to start running. It will be a little while before the water heats up, especially if you want it to be 100 degrees or higher. Once this is done, you should be all set. Congratulate yourself on a job well done, and enjoy your new (heated) hot tub.
