How long will a balloon float and can you make it float longer

The average float time for an 11" latex balloon is about 18 hours. Some 12" balloons that are sold at party stores will only float for about 12 hours. Because balloons are very porous, and the helium molecule is really small, the helium seeps through the walls of the balloon.

The good news is that you can extend the float time of the balloon with a product called Hi-Float. Hi-float is a water- based gel that you put inside the balloon to seal the pores of the balloon, so that it will retain the helium longer. Hi-floated balloons can even last up to a few weeks!

To use hi-float, pre-inflate all the balloons- that is fill them up with air, and then let all the air back out. This is to identify problems, such as pin-holes and windows, that will cause the balloon to pop upon inflation. You want to weed out the bad balloons before you put the hi-float in because it make a big gooey mess if the balloon pops afterwards!

After you've pre-inflated your balloon, squirt the recommended amount of hi-float into the balloon, (measurements provided w/ product), then squish it around so that it coats the entire bowl of the balloon. Be careful to keep it out of the neck of the balloon or you'll have a hard time tying it.

Inflate and tie your balloon. If the balloon sinks, it's probably because you've used too much hi-float. If it wobbles from side-to-side, it will probably float just fine once the hi-float dries.

This is a great option for deliveries or multi- day events. Something that's important to note, Hi-float doesn't do very well outside with weather and really works better indoors.
