Can You Believe It? - They Are Calling Lack Of Exercise A Disease

One of the reasons many people avoid exercise is they probably view it as 'work'

. Well, it is physical work just like our ancestors were required to do every single day if they wished to stay alive. This strenuous manual work gave the human body all the exercise it needed and no additional intentional exercise was ever needed.

But how things have changed, people now-a-days spend as much as 80 percent of their day sitting, either at their job or other sedentary work or in their leisure time. Thanks to machinery that replaces manual work, cars that replace walking and cycling, technology, household appliances and gadgets we can get through the entire day avoiding having to exert ourselves in any way.

We have in effect decreased levels of physical activity in our life to almost zero. Somehow we think that this is okay, that there are no consequences and that our ancient human blueprint does not matter anymore. But our bodies have been designed to be active - very active and our genes cannot simply adapt over the course of a few hundred years to this new phenomenon.

We are now faced with a huge health risk as adults and it has been estimated that living a sedentary lifestyle is as dangerous to our health as smoking. It now even has a name 'exercise deficiency syndrome' and affects approximately eight out of ten adults.

We need to live in reality - physical activity that engages the muscular system is not an 'optional extra' or a luxury. Our body functions better, is protected better from disease and lasts longer when it gets the vigorous movement that it needs. This is what stimulates the hormones that renew and repair old worn out cells and tissues. Without these 'growth and repair' hormones the body weakens and becomes susceptible to disease.

It is non-optional and you must give your body the proper exercise it needs if you are to get the most out of life. Both the quality and the quantity of your life depend on it. Whether you choose to accept and act on that reality is in your hands.

How hard is it anyway to go to your local gym or fitness center 2-3 times each week and engage your muscles through their ranges of movement under a load to keep them strong? Proper exercise that replaces the 'work' our ancestors did is what tells the body to grow and remain on this earth. Sitting around tells the body to decay, degenerate and die.

Beginning a more active lifestyle that includes a couple of strength training sessions each week is something you can easily do for yourself. Think of it as making an investment in your future so 1) you get to see the last third of your life and 2) that you spend this time doing what you like and remaining independent not sitting in a nursing home somewhere unable to dress and feed yourself. There is no better investment than that.
