Can You Handle The Training And The Rigorous Hours?
So you have made the decision to work in the medical field; you need to ask yourself some questions before jumping in
. Currently, the number of students who go to college with medical school in mind is staggering. And unfortunately these young people haven't really given careful consideration to what it really means to become a doctor. If you fall into this category, before you enroll in medical school, degree, so you can ask yourself these simple questions.
Is an M.D. what I really want to be? Is it because you want to help people? Do I have the right actions to succeed in this line of work? Do you find it easy to stay focused even when surrounded by distractions?
Are you any good with biology, mathematics and chemistry? Will my courses be enjoyable, and will I understand that they are the fundamentals for more in-depth study in medicine? Do you possess a strong enough love for humanity to endure and manage people's pain when they are at their worst point? Am I able to maintain my sense of humor even when the people around me are losing theirs? Can I accept the responsibility of making big decisions without simply losing it?
Am I willing to work and study for years while I live frugally? Can I get all right with working for years before I enjoy the financial fruits of my work? Are you at all familiar with today's health care field? Do I read about health care on a regular basis, and am I able to predict trends over the next 10 years? You can get a very good idea of what you will need to know if you want to get into medical school. Most schools will encourage you to include liberal arts courses in your undergraduate program and provide detailed listings and descriptions of all course requirements. The best colleges will offer guidance and counseling BEFORE you enroll to help you decide if a career as a health care professional is the right choice for you.
The journey to become a doctor is hard and long. There is a total of 114 medical schools located within the country. There are many qualified applicants who are rejected when the aggressive evaluations are made to get the very best students in each school. A solid B average student will not be accepted under the intense evaluation of potential candidates when they are picked, but it is possible that you may get accepted without absolute straight A's. There are some undergraduate courses that are evaluated closely when considering med school candidates and that is organic chemistry.
Develop a program of study that offers alternatives if you decide to change careers while you are in school. You need to keep your options and mind open, look into intellectual pursuits as well as those designed to further your career. It is crucial for your profession for you to retain your positive attitude and humor.
Practice good study skills and do not sign up for classes that are too easy for you in order to get a higher grade. This would just end up wasting your time and not really helping you at all. The direct path is often not an easy one, but it is the best. If you find that you are running into trouble remember to ask for help before things get out of hand.
Often people get swept up by their own plans and they forget to stop and ask, 'Is this what I really want? Do I still want it?' Pay attention to where you are at any given moment so that you can determine if you're on the right track or have to make course corrections. If you don't, you'll pay more in the long run and may end up in at a destination you never planned on.
Make the decision early on that you most likely cannot take up both routes. As an example, there are students who think they can go to dental school instead of medical school. This isn't allowed anymore because the dental schools are only admitting students who are committed to dentistry, and the requirements are very strict.
Commitment and dedication are key to avoiding the frustration that can occur on the way to attaining your medical degree. Set goals that are realistic so you will not become unhappy or frustrated. If at any point along the road you decide that you do not feel fulfilled by your choices, remain honest and flexible enough to take a good look at your goals and figure out if they are really what you want.
