Can You Learn SEO from a Book?

It should be easy, simple and intuitive

It should be easy, simple and intuitive. If you launch a website, people and search engines should just find it, right? Unfortunately, back in the real world, this is not the case. Due to the number of new sites coming online every day, it is critical that you have a clear and well defined search engine optimization campaign in mind. Website traffic and rankings do not just happen. It takes knowledge, planning, creativity and a lot of hard work.

So, back to the question at hand. Can you learn SEO from a book? To a certain degree, you can. I am an advocate of learning and books can be a great resource, but they can only take you so far. There are so many great books on this subject. There are two books that I found quite interesting for different reasons. The first on is "SEO for Dummies". In general, I am a big fan of any of the "for Dummies" books. They are usually very well written and offer information appropriate for all reader skill levels. This is actually a great book for beginners and a decent resource for more advanced readers. The second book that I am a fan of is called "The Art of SEO". This book is very comprehensive, but the topics are explained well and demonstrated in an understandable manner. If you are looking for a starting point, either of these books would be good investments.

To take it a step further though, there is nothing better than getting your hands dirty. As you are learning and practicing search engine optimization basics, keep in mind that SEO is an ongoing process in a very dynamic arena. New competitors, techniques and resources are popping up every day that could conceivable change someone's SEO strategies. Once you have a basic knowledge of SEO, join online forums to see what people are chatting about. You can also peruse search engine consultants' websites and practice on a starter webpage of your own before launching your main website. It is important to understand how each concept can executed and how long it may take to get results. Few things happen overnight online. Patience and planning are key components of SEO. I'd like to repeat that. Patience and planning are key components of SEO. This is very important. Continuously changing and disjointed SEO actions can be as harmful as no SEO at all.
