What is meant by health? Scientists define health as a state of complete physical and mental well-being

. This means that both the mind and the body must be completely fit for a person to be considered healthy. Proper food, hygiene, rest, exercise, and health are essential to sustain a healthy life. However, one of the food stuff we must include in our diet named as carbohydrates (or carbs) which acts as a main source of energy for our body.

Carbohydrates are called carbohydrates because of the presence of carbon, oxygen and hydrogen. Bread, rice, wheat, fruits and fruit juices, sugar, potato, honey, and corn are some of carbohydrates. On the other hand, candies and soft drinks are very bad for your teeth. It is much better to eat natural sources of carbohydrates such as fruits and whole grains

In addition to that, carbohydrates are present in three basic forms

1. Simple carbohydrate As the name suggest, it is the simplest form of carbohydrate called as simple sugars. For example: you can find them in refined sugars, like the white sugar you'd find in a sugar bowl. If you have a lollipop, you're eating simple carbs. But you'll also find simple sugars in more nutritious foods, such as fruit and milk. It's better to get your simple sugars from food like fruit and milk. Why? Because sugar is supposed to be added in these foods containing vitamins, fiber, and important nutrients like calcium.


2. Complex carbohydrate-These are complex in nature yet more nutritious than simple carbohydrates, mainly it is a starch component which is found in vegetables, fruit, whole grain etc..

Caution: Try to skip the easily digested refined carbohydrates from refined grains(simple carbohydrate) such as white bread, white rice, as well as pastries, sugared sodas, and other highly processed foods, since these may contribute to weight gain and promote diabetes and heart diseases.

Carbohydrate health benefits:


As you know your body prefers to use glucose as the main source of fuel for daily activity. Whereas your muscles need glucose to move and your organs need glucose to function, including your brain. While the body can make glucose from extra dietary protein and fats you may eat, it is suggested that half of your daily calories come from carbohydrates. Try to get your carbohydrates from healthy sources such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables.

The three main nutrients--protein, carbohydrate and fat--affect blood sugar differently. Since carbohydrates contain both sugar and starch, they have the biggest effect on blood sugar. All of the carbohydrate, you eat get is converted into blood glucose within five minutes to three hours after the food is eaten. For people with diabetes, knowing carbohydrates' effect on blood sugar is important for good health.

Therefore, how much carbohydrate you eat (whether it's sugar or starch) would decide your blood sugar level after a meal or a snack, so keeping track of your carbohydrate intake which is important.
