Most students take psychology as their major because they are interested in human behavior
. If you are a student majoring in psychology, you might be wondering what your
career options are after you graduate. Your study will prepare you for a wide range of options for career, including some careers that do not relate to psychology at first glance.
Since understanding human behavior is the basic for many careers, your psychology major will help you in your chosen field, if it does not seem to be related to psychology at first. You will find that you can interact with people better whether if you choose to be a sales person, manager, social worker, or public relation officer.
Of course you can choose careers that are more closely related to psychology. There are also many career options for you. You can be a school counselor, teachers, therapist, clinical psychologist, or industrial organizational psychologist.
If you intend to be a psychologist, you need to further your education after you get your bachelor degree to fulfill the minimal education requirement for a psychologist in your country or state. Some countries require that you have a master degree. Other countries or state require you to finish your doctoral study. After you complete your academic education, you also need to finish certain hours of obligatory and supervised clinical practice.
You need to specialize in one field in your higher education. Most common options are organizational - industrial psychology, adult clinical psychology, educational psychology, and developmental psychology. This field will help you focus on one aspect of your psychology practice.
Academic education and finishing supervised clinical work is not enough to declare yourself as a full fledged psychologist. If you want to practice independently, you have to apply for a practicing license. Requirements to be a practicing psychologist are different in each country and state so that you need to find out information that is relevant to your location. When you consider a job in psychology field, you must be ready to meet and interact with people every day. There are some other options for people who prefer to specialize in academic settings. Aside from being a lecturer, you can also develop new psychology tests or conduct social research. Most of these careers revolve in a university. However, you can also work in a business field or in government agency which require these kind of work. Business agencies for consumer behavior research and companies who develop and sell industrial organizational psychological tests are some places where you can develop your career.
