Career Transition Guide

People commit mistakes at times

People commit mistakes at times. The choice of opting for a career one does not enjoy may be the greatest mistake of them all. The factors which weighed one's decision may be the money available on the job or demand for a particular job at the time when one entered college. Sometimes it becomes a Hobson's choice where no other option is left but to take the job. In such cases while working one feels that one doesn't like what one's doing. Slowly, day by day, one starts hating to work.

Gail describes the natural stages of adult development: building stages and transition times. During building stages you feel energized and excited by your life and your career. Then, suddenly, without warning, you enter into a transition time. During this time you feel confused, anxious, distressed. Sometimes you know what caused the transition to occur, sometimes not. Being human, it is natural to want to get out of these transition times as quickly as possible. Who wants to feel the "YUCK"? We all want to feel the "GOOD STUFF" of being in a building stage. If, however, we don't take the opportunity to explore what the next steps need to be while we are in the transition time, we will keep bouncing back to the transition no matter how hard we try to push ourselves into a building stage. The result is to prolong the transition.

While you are answering, add the occupations that enter your mind. Then, select one as your job objective. A job objective consists of six to ten words. Do not use fancy words or worn-out phrases. It should be precise and clear. For example, "Position as a language and content editor with a publication company." Now that you have the objective, research on the requirements for the position you are aiming for. Is there a special education or experience needed? What are the skills needed? Check job listings or search the internet for these requirements and find out if you possess these important abilities and skills? Special knowledge can be utilized similarly with skills.

Focus! This should be the first thing you do. Then, don't panic! This is not the time to panic. When looking for work, do not make impulsive decisions like taking the first offer given to you. In the first place, if you left your previous work because you do not feel happy doing it, then it won't do you any good if you accept a similar work right away. During your free time, reflect on your career transition. Ask yourself "What career do you really want to pursue?"

In order to help you manage this big career transition, ask yourself these several questions: what is it that you do best; what is the thing you do that you are so proud of; your interest; what do other people commend you for; or what is it that you do that most people can't? As you jot down your responses, write also the ideal jobs or careers that go well with those skills. This is the most vital portion of your entire career transition period. Choose the job that fits you best. Does that job include the thing that you love to do? Do you get a sense of satisfaction when you are working with it? If you say yes, then you're moving closer and closer to your new career.
