As the economic job climate worsens, many people are trying to find industries that are not losing jobs

. One such career is as a mechanical engineer. The occupational outlook for this job is shown to increase at least until 2016. If you ever considered a career in math or science, this might be the option for you. There are plenty of jobs, but not enough qualified people. Here are some ways that will help you transition.

Educational Requirements

In order to even consider this job you will need a bachelor's degree from an accredited four year college or university. You might even consider getting some type of work experience or internship to get a feel for the position. You will need to constantly stay on top of current trends in mechanical engineering. If going to school is not for you then you may want to reconsider as you will need to continue with your education in the form of a Master's or PhD.

Interest in science and math


If you were considered to be a nerd or geek at all in your life then you might have found your calling. You will need to have a excellent knowledge and curiosity for how things work. This is a job that would entail designing items and working with machinery. You will be tasked with converting natural energy sources into practical uses.

Pick your specialty

There are various types of engineering to choose from. You can even work in a specific industry such as petroleum or plastics. You will have to decide what niche you want to specialize in after you've decided that engineering is for you. Make sure you pick the right one as it will take you approximately four to five years to finish your undergraduate degree. You don't want to waste your time on the wrong field.

If you can get your educational requirements met and determine that you do have a love of science and math, able to pick your specialty you will find that the opportunities are limitless for this field.
