Business ethics of environment, which are integral to the process of factories establishments, production, and distribution, are closely related to the environmental sustainability of ecosystems of earth. Today, the debate on the infringing upon the environmental ethics, due to mass poisonous emissions of factories is very hot. There is no denying the fact, that the rise of human population, over the last few decades, has necessitated the industrial development in order to cater for the material needs of people. The traditional agricultural societies are swiftly transforming into the industrial societies. Important factories emitting poisonous gases and effluents, include the petro-chemical factories, PVC factories, brick kilns and Coal fired factories, chemical factories like paint, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, weedicides factories, heavy metals and nuclear processing factories (Beychok, Milton R. 1987). Acid rains, desertification, droughts, floods and accumulation of carbon monoxide and sulfuric oxides in the air are harming the life in cities. Global warming, green house effect, cancers, stress, respiratory diseases, extinction of fauna and flora are the common gifts of these poisonous factory's emissions for the mankind. The environmental ethics dictate that the discharge of wastes by the factories should be in a safe way. Unsafe discharge creates the problems.
But there is always a solution. The solution lies in the ethical responsibility of the factories to the environment, the ecology and mother earth at large. This is interesting to understand the discourse on industrial development and environmental sustainability. The two sides, factory owners and environmentalists have taken very strong position against each other. It seems, as if, they are pitched against each other in a tussle to win. But, this is heartening to know that there is a common ground between two positions and solutions are obviated when think on the issue in a cool manner.

We can look at a specific case of the Roan Plateaus which has been at the centre of controversy between the government and the environmental protection agencies over the government decision to lease it out. There are more creeks and streams which continue to be contaminated by the chemical from the drilling around the Roan plateau which has caused great environmental concerns among the owners of these factories. At the same time, there have been little efforts by BLM and the factories to address the issue leading to a number of legal battles between the environmentalist and the other parties.
Roan plateau is one of the very rich oil regions in the country. Roan had been preserved for Naval Oil Reserves 1 and 3 due to its energy richness. Through and Act of Congress, the mineral reserves in Roan were transferred from the hands of Department of Energy to BLM in 1997. The same Act directed BLM to work on how they could lease the land for petroleum exploration and other forms of development as soon as possible. BLM or the Bureau of land management is the main agency that acts as the leading agency for the congress.
However this decision has attracted uproar from the environmentalist. Roan Plateau is home to important ecological complexes in the country like the pure Colorado River, various wildlife habitats, and many others. Although BLM has asserted that it will protect the natural ecology and at the same time permit exploration of oil and gases, this casts doubts on the viability of the plan.
Under the current plan more than 127,007 acres of the public and private land under the Roan plateau may finally be exploited in order to pave way for gas and oil exploration. More than half other public land under the plateau will be highly limited by BLM restricted development plan.
The position taken by the environmentalists
The Roan Plateau continues to be a bitter struggle between the government and the environmentalist. As the struggle continues, the environmentalists have gathered together in order to protect the Roan from drilling. They have instituted legal battles in the federal courts which are aimed at protecting the plateau from the possible environment degradation.
There are all reasons why everyone should be concerned about the Roan plateau. Coloradans a re so passionate about land that holds so much beauty with its ruggedness, scenery, and diverse wildlife apart from its energy deposit. However the approaches that the federal and the state government want to use in its exploration remains controversial
The environmentalists take a harder and unflinching position (Green Peace 2007). On the issue of Roan Plateau, there are more than 12 environmental organizations which have collected more than 17,000 letters of protest to the ongoing drilling services at the Roan Plateau. They allege the factories for increasing the smoke, particulate matter, dust and noise in the air that harms the human health. The discharge of toxic effluent in the soils is causing salinity and soda-city. The factories have poisoned the rivers. The factory owners are blindly running after profits. The development discourse put forth by the factory owners is counterproductive. The factories, instead of developing, are destroying the human lives, flora and fauna and industrialists are just after profits. The industrialists are least concerned about environmental ethics.
