Cash strapped Scots are being ripped off in their own homes

The Scottish debt charity CAS (Citizen Advice Scotland) has warned that mobile telephone and internet service providers are charging excessively while the country is still struggling financially.

CAS handled eight thousand related cases last year, and the largest reported problem relates to the transparency of pricing leaving individuals feeling that they had been overcharged and mis-sold.

The report condemned the actions of the ISP and mobile phone companies, claiming that it had left people vulnerable to exploitation'.

A spokesman for Trust Deed Scotland, the leading introducers of Scottish Trust Deeds (The Scottish IVA equivalent) welcomed the report and concurred with the findings.

The spokesman said "We have had discussion with many clients who have told of that mobile companies have been less than sympathetic towards people who are in financial difficulties and wish to cancel their contacts. The contract doesn't allow much flexibility and the attitudes of the call centre staff towards our clients has in some instances been quite disappointing.

ISPs have not been fair either, there seems to be an overall mentality of disconnect now, ask questions later'. Disconnecting an internet connection where for example the person works from home, self-employed and relies on the internet will have wider reaching and more serious implications. A balanced approach is required.

Transparent pricing is something that we feel strongly about in our business model, as such we only work with companies that share the same core beliefs as ourselves and most importantly to our clients, we only work with and recommend companies who do not charge setup fees for their services.

The debt solution industry in Scotland has been scrutinised recently by the OFT and rightly so, there are too many companies putting profit before the needs of their clients, a client base who are very much vulnerable to exploitation."

Trust Deeds, offered through Trust Deed Scotland and as advertised on STV, are a solution to unsecured debt in Scotland, generally where an individual owes more than 10,000.

Trust Deeds can be used to write off up to 90% of an overall debt and will help you to clear debt in a typical, maximum period of 36 months (3 years). While it stops contact, interest and charges from creditors, by using legislation set out by the Scottish government, Trust Deeds are not a solution to all and therefore you should discuss your options with a qualified money advisor. You can arrange to speak to an impartial money advisor for Trust Deed advice at a charity such as CAS or CCCS, or you can speak to a Trust Deed advisor now by contacting Trust Deed Scotland.
