The barbs were uncalled for, because Ergen never had the least intention of playing anything that was not by the book. He got licenses and certifications through proper means, paid his taxes and always kept himself on the tenterhooks of emerging technology. His way of doing business was fighting it out fair and square, though he likes to play by his own rules. Ergen's knowledge about his consumers and their love for affordable prices has been the focal point of Dish Network Inc.

Charles Ergen feels that exorbitant profit-making by business firms will only drive away the customers, especially in this receding economy. True to his thinking, he kept pushing the cost barrier, making his base prices lower than anyone else in the market. His price cuts offended his rivals because they had to follow suit to remain in business. That led to the overall market prices deflating. Finally they could no longer keep quiet about it and started off all kinds of propaganda against Dish Network Inc and Charles Ergen in particular. But Ergen's business knowledge overcame all these hurdles easily.
