Charlie Sheen--Addict, Manic, or Both

Charlie Sheen--Addict, Manic, or Both

Charlie Sheen--Addict, Manic, or Both

I have been a fan of Charlie Sheen long before Two and a Half Men, and I have been following him astrologically for the past three years.

Charlie's natal chart has numerous aspects of success: his Sun sextiles Mars, his Moon trines his Mercury, his Mercury sextiles both Venus and Jupiter, and his Mars trines Saturn. He has several very favorable, personal aspects---his Midheaven trines his Ascendant and North Lunar Node, and his Part of Fortune sextiles Neptune. Charlie shares some favorable aspects with others of his generation: his Saturn trines Neptune, his Uranus sextiles Neptune, and his Neptune sextiles Pluto.

Talent-wise, Charlie's Sun quintiles Jupiter, his Mercury quintiles his North Lunar Node, and his Midheaven biquintiles his Uranus, Pluto, and Part of Fortune.

Since Christmas of 2009, we have seen a year of alleged alcohol- and substance-abuse-induced misbehaviors. This bad boy is famous for prostitutes, domestic violence, and run-ins with authorities. Why these poor choices?

Charlie's natal chart shows that his Sun conjuncts Uranus, Pluto, and Part of Fortune. It squares his Ascendant and opposes his Saturn. His Moon semisquares his Mars and Midheaven and opposes his Jupiter. His Mercury squares Neptune. His Mars squares his Midheaven. His Saturn opposes his Sun, Uranus, Pluto, and Part of Fortune. His Uranus conjuncts his Pluto. His Ceres squares his Moon and Jupiter. Together, his Moon, Jupiter, and Ceres form a mutable T-square.

Over the past three weeks, a sober Charlie has given radio and television interviews than sound anything but sober. Now that he is sober, he is still shocking fans. I have not personally interviewed him so I can't actually make a diagnosis. However, from his recent television interview with Jeff Rosen, I will make a provisional "tv" diagnosis. Charlie is presently suffering a manic episode.

Manic Episode

The criteria in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders for a Manic Episode is as follows:

A) A distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated, expansive or irritable mood, lasting at least 1 week (or any duration if hospitalization is necessary)

B) During the period of mood disturbance, three (or more) of the following symptoms have persisted (four if the mood is only irritable) and have been present to a significant degree: 1) inflated self-esteem or grandiosity 2) decreased need for sleep (e.g., feels rested after only 3 hours of sleep) 3) more talkative than usual or pressure to keep talking 4) flight of ideas or subjective experience that thoughts are racing 5) distractibility (i.e., attention too easily drawn to unimportant or irrelevant external stimuli) 6) increase in goal-directed activity (at work, at school, or sexually) or psychomotor agitation 7) excessive involvement in pleasurable activities that have a high potential for painful consequences (e.g., engaging in unrestrained buying sprees, sexual indiscretions, or foolish business investments)

C) The symptoms do not meet criteria for a Mixed Episode

D) The mood disturbance is sufficiently severe to cause marked impairment in occupational functioning or in usual social activities or relationships with others, or to necessitate hospitalization to prevent harm to self or others, or there are psychotic features.

E) The symptoms are not due to the direct physiological effects of a substance (e.g., a drug of abuse, a medication or other treatment) or a general medical condition (e.g., hyperthyroidism)

Note: Manic-like episodes that are clearly caused by somatic antidepressant treatment (e.g., medication, electroconvulsive therapy, light therapy) should not count toward a diagnosis of Bipolar I disorder. A single manic episode suggests a possible diagnosis of a Bipolar I Disorder, Single Manic Episode. The criteria in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders for a Bipolar I Disorder, Single Manic Episode is as follows:

Presence of only one Manic Episode...and no past major Depressive Episodes.

The Manic Episode is not better accounted for by Schizoaffective Disorder and is not superimposed on Schizophrenia, Schizophreniform Disorder, Delusional Disorder, or Psychotic Disorder Not Otherwise Specified.

A Bipolar I Disorder is frequently associated with substance abuse, child abuse, spouse abuse, or other violent behavior as well as truancy, school failure, occupational failure, divorce, or episodic antisocial behavior. It is not uncommon for someone experiencing a bipolar episode to self-medicate with alcohol and other drugs. It is also not uncommon for substance abuse to lead to a bipolar episode. So why is Charlie experiencing this now?

Around July 7, 2010, Charlie's progressed Mercury conjoined his natal Mars. This aspect is part of an ongoing period of stress that includes several similar aspects, including his progressed Mercury squaring his natl Midheaven on or around December 19, 2009, and his progressed Midheaven septiling his natal East Pont on or around December 25, 2009. I want to focus on the most powerful and most recent of these three progressed aspectsprogressed Mercury conjunct natal Mars.

Progressed Mercury Conjunct Natal Mars

The progressed Mercury moves on average about one degree a year. It speeds up, slows down, and even reverses from direct motion to retrograde motion and vice versa. Although this is not a rare aspect; for most people, the progressed Mercury will never conjunct natal Mars. Because of its slow movement, the conditions symbolized by this aspect may last three years or more.

When Mercury conjuncts natal Mars by progressionthat is, when progressed Mercury conjuncts natal Mars--the functions of Mars find new oulets through the functions of Mercury, and the functions of Mercury receive increased energy from Mars. This progressed aspect combines the energies of movement, work, ambition, and achievement with those of intelligence, logic, planning, and communications. It gives a voice to strength and gives force to speech. It symbolizes mental tasks as well as skillful planning, effective action, and satisfying accomplishments.

While this conjunction sounds beneficialand it is, it must also be regarded as Mars, the god of war, teaming up with Mercury, the messenger of the gods. The potential for growth and accomplishment is great, but is the potential for conflict and destruction. It can indicate aggressive speech, verbal arguments, and sharp speech.

This particular aspect does not occur in most charts and its significance must be determined in relation to the whole chart. We can gain some insight into what Charlie is experiencing by looking at his natal chart. We start with natal Merucry and Mars, their sign positions, and their house positions. Charlie's Mercury is in Leo in in his fourth house. His Mars is in Scorpio in his sixth hoouse. His Mercury and Mars do not make any major aspect to one another. They both have a mixture of easy and difficult aspects to other planets and points in his natal chart.

Natal Mercury in Leo in the Fourth House

Mercury in Leo symbolizes enthusiastic and bold communications. It strongly emphasizes self-expression. Thought and speech are intense, dramatic, and theatrical as well as warm, creative, and personable. The individual with Mercury in Leo may be drawn to the fields of teaching, working with children, and/or entertainment. Tendencies to be bossy, domineering, stubborn, overly dramatic, self-consumed, and selfish frequently accompany Mercury in Leo. The individual with Mercury in Leo can be giving and affectionate, but he or she may have little tolerance for the opinions of others. The mind serves the ego.

Mercury in the fourth house symbolizes the need to establish oneself in the world of thoughts and ideas. It emphasizes the home, foundations, background, and mother. The mind tends to settle on issues of securityhome, family, and such. This placement indicates thoughts have great substance and feeling. There may be a lifelong interest in history, the past, and nostalgia in general. The mind stimulates the home.

Natal Mars in Scorpio in the Sixth House

Planets in Scorpio are intensified. Their functions are held in until they burst forth like a volcano. It may be necessary to involve the resources and energies of others in order to express their functions. These planets may be expressed secretly or covertly.

Mars is the traditional ruler of Scopio and its modern co-ruler. As such, this combination can bring out the best of both Mars and Scorpio. Mars in Scorpio symbolizes the ability to manage shared resoursesmaterial, financial, emotional, psychological, spiritual, and sexaul. The individual with Mars in Scorpio is concerned with the substances of associations, marriage, and partnerships. They seek to manage the resourses of others and remove the nonessentials. They tend to hold in their emotions, ultimately expressing them in an explosive fashion. The damage done by these emotional outbursts may lead to spiritual crises, transcendence, and self-transformation.

Mars in Scorpio expresses as analytical, calculating, complex, deep, insightful, intelligent, intense, intimate, inventive, lustful, moody, passionate, penetrating, persistent, powerful, regenerating, renewing, resourceful, ruthless, sarcastic, scientific, secretive, spiritual, stubborn, vindictive, and wise.

Mars in the sixth house symbolizes the release of energy through work, service, health, and adjustment in a skillful yet routine fashion. The individual with Mars in the sixth house can be analytic, discriminative, methodical, logical, and detail-oriented. Mars in the sixth house emphasizes self-improvement which can manifest negatively as perfectionism, criticism, obsessions, compulsions, worry, anxiety, insomnia, and hypochondria. Attention to work, service, exercise, nutrition, and daily routines can go a long way to prevent or limit problems with health, vitality, and depression.

Summary

Currently in Charlie's chart, his progressed Merucury conjunct natal Mars appears to be manifesting as a manic episode, possibly as part of a bipolar I disorder. Charlie's Mercury trines his Moon and has other favorable aspects. However, its semisquare to Neptune and its semioctile to Pluto may bring out the more negative sides of Mercury in Leo and of progressed Mercury conjunct natal Mars. Mars in Scorpio clearly can overpower Mercury. It is also difficult to bring out the best when dealing with the combination of Leo and Scorpio. I am sure that, in time Charlie, will find a way to actualize the positive side of this aspect. In the mean time, I hope that someone close to Charlie will recognize that he needs medical help.
